Yeah that mentality is the problem in all kinds of games. Especially in mmorpgs. Damage is not everything.. especially 1-2%

Costs about 70k gold total for a armour set and weapons on PC EU - price and amounts are no longer an issue, it's not like when IC came with increase to v16 and a stack of 200 ingots cost like 500k gold or smth, it's about the fear of being less geared than the competition and the current state of the game fully supports that sadly. Meta+skill will destroy anyone who is not running the greatest and best setup, it simply is a fact. You might be able to kill someone who is less skilled, but not someone with same skillset but running FoTM setup.

Troll the meta by playing something else.
Did that once with a guild where everyone wore "Maw of Infernal" and we swept enemies away with an army of summoned Daedroths. It was original and fun. :D

I wear the meta because of the potential 1-2%. IF all of my runs had sustained warhorns, combat prayer, spc etc then meh but they don't. so a few percent here then another bit there and it begins to add up. I do firmly believe though that anything over 30k dps (single) is nice but not remotely necessary.

So to answer your question more directly, if the general player level was better then meta would be less worth the chase, but people with a mindset of "hey I completed" will always ensure that those trying to do more require it.

For DPS, meta is meta for a reason. The math geeks figure out what is best.

If you want to break the Meta, @hedna123b14_ESO is the master. He has unorthodox builds for every class. One or two might have actually shifted the Meta.

In PVP, there is no Meta, just FOTM. Lots of ways to accomplish the same goal in PVP, but admittedly, some are better than others.

yup, it isn't getting the Mats to make the set's hard, its the endless farming to get gold to buy or the time to farm the Gold upgrade materials to make everything "Legendary", because to go into PvP with anything less than gold armor and weapons is just gimping yourself..

I've seen this since I started playing D2 LoD. I've experienced this up to this game.

It's something that will never go away, especially with twitch/youtube/redtube... people make their living off of the ability to showcase builds and gameplay.

There is a low cost way to test out gear, at least crafted. Just make two sets in CP160 improved to like Green, or whatever. Try both sets out and see which of the two give the better output for how you play. Your not comparing to what you have, your comparing the two sets to each other with your playstyle. Get a friend to battle against if you have to, or go find some Mammoths to play with. Once you know that, then either improve one of them to Purple or Gold, or make it in CP160 and take that to Purple or Gold.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Some do think for themselves, even create their own builds and gear combo's people don't seem to notice such builds/playstyles until a youtuber 'creates' it and then its one of the best things since sliced sweet rolls

Play how you want.. it might not be very effective.. it could mean you get destroyed.. it will lose you potential AP.. it may even lose you a place in a competitive guild.. so yeah, you can do things you're own way, think for yourself .. you're goal needs to be fun and to find others who want to have fun..because to some you're a scrub if you break the mould, you're the weakest link, you're lowering the groups AP potential. tut tut

Meta just looks at the swings, vs people like myself that look at the stable (stable and this game, rofl) mechanics and try to do something more lasting.

Meta I think represents a lot of people, primarily heavy PvP players, that want to ensure they play the best they can at every log in.

Other meta issue is not everyone crafts so it's harder to switch sets or try different setups.

The big fix is the itemization in 1 tamriel. All sets capping at 160 is going to do wonders for build diversity

It's a bit more than 1% to 2% with some things. Following the current PVE stam build meta properly is probably more like a 20-40% different in dps output. There is very little flexibility.

Which is why i prefer to roll as the utility man or utility/healer. There are dps everywhere, but not enough utility spammers. Perma root works wonders when someone is trying to 1vx a group. He gets a rude awakening, especially if he is streaming and one guy perma rooted him to one spot, while the other players dpsed the hell out of him

Chain and root spam is a nice way to pull in enemies into ur zerg and kill them fast, repeat the steps and u will kill off the enemy zerg in no time.

There are just so many playstyles available, u can mess around with a group of enemies with utility spam, while another guy drops a seige and takes out the group.

Endless possibilities. Build options are far from dead.

That's kind of vague though. What happens to be meta may work for a select group, but not everyone. Likewise, what ISN'T meta can actually work for a select group, and not others. There is no universal "best build" because everyone has different play styles. To sum it up with a metaphor (lol oh the irony :D ): Excalibur is useless if you're not King Arthur.

It's nice so many people try different things though! Variety is what truly makes multiplayer games entertaining, be it co-op or PvP, because you never know what to expect! Seeing the same old boring stuff over and over is both unamusing and easily countered.
