In Order To Be A Tank. Do You Need To Wear A Shield.

Question. In order to be a tank in pvp. Do you need to wear A shield also? I've made a Breton DK. But I want to make him as a tank also. But with dps also. But since I'm Magicka. I worry I will not have any stamina to use shield to block attacks.

Is it possible to still be considered as tanky and do magicka dps also? With no shield? Thanks :)

Before TG/DB yes I personally did 2H tank but with the removal of bracing and the increase cost of blocking you pretty much need a shield now to block and even then stamina drains pretty fast.

Reason saying that is tanks need resistance cause tanks are meant to take the damage and brush it off like it's nothing at the cost of damage. Not sayings it's impossible you can be tanky and still deal a bit of damage just not as much of either as most expect.

But to start off you want high resistance be physical, magical and a bit of critical too and you'll want to pool your warrior points into hardy and elemental defender to further reduce damage received (as of now i do I think 48 for a 15% reduction to damage) and what is left over you can add more to resistance or quick recovery. Sadly you'll wanna spend 100 points into shadow ward in the green tree to make up for bracing removal cause Wrobel logic and with heavy armors passive that restores 50% more resources you might wanna invest into tenacity cause 2 or 3 heavy attacks can do wonders in regen which does go great with the expert skills in the blue tree that increases heavy and light attacks.

Now for sets as for me right now I got 4 armor master and 3 song of the lamea to boost resistance even more but with the new Shadow of the Hist dungeons the Haj Mota monster set might be good cause it basically boost resistance by 6K so you can go with a another 5pc set which can be hist bark cause more health and 20% dodge but wanna keep some damage well laws of Jul for damage or seducer for better resource management.

So that's some tips I can give you'll want impen on your gear for the crit boost and you'll want defending on your weapons for more resistance boost. So hopefully you'll get pretty good resistant while still having a bit of damage but be warn you can loose alot of stamina not managing your blocking and penetration effects will hurt alot.

Thank you! This is very detailed. I'll good and use a shield now. This is awesome information.

If ur stamina is low and you are worried you cant block attacks, all the more reason to wear a shield... Cos it reduces block cost passively in 1hS tree. There are certain mechanics in ESO that tanks need to interrupt or block if not you get 1 hit or take sooo much damage that your healer is going to be hard pressed. Ideally you want to be as self sustaining as possible with good control of the situation. I can explain with examples pertaining to my DK tank.

    1. As a tank, your primary role is to.... well take hits instead of letting your DPS Or heals get smacked into the ground.
    2. As a tank, you are a battle field controller. I use talons, caltrops + chains to group and stack up adds while slowing them down so that my team can stack n burn.
    3. As a tank, you need to watch for things that need to be interrupted. DPS too busy smashing their face into keyboard to hit those 50k DPS numbers to link in chat via FTC to stroke their ego =X As such, its your job to keep those nubcakes alive. 80% of them will gladly stand in things like the archers aoe spray attack, or the mages channeled aoe bomb. Interrupt stuff like that so your healer dosent have a seizure trying to keep every1 alive.
    4. As a tank, you are also a support for DPS. Yes, that means remove that damage ult from your bar. You arent going to do much damage with that DBOS or standard or leap with 2k weapon power. Slot aggresive warhorn. Its good. It buffs everyone and helps your team do more damage overall.

As for gear, I run 5 tavas, 2 blood spawn and 3 potentates. Bloodspawn gives ult on hit, tavas gives ult on dodge (i run shuffle) and potentates reduces ult costs by 10%. I run heroic slash that gives ult+snares+maims, and DKs get ult everytime they use earthen heart skills (namely igneous shields) to give every1 major mending and me ult. All this means that I can drop a wahorn back to back almost.

So yes, slot 1hS. Its hard to get by without things like heroic slash and ransack/puncture. It makes your life easier as a tank cos it makes you really tanky. You cant be desperately trying to stay alive AND watch for all those things ive listed above.

Nvm u said PvP. My bad. And yes, you still would want a shield. Basically to be tanky and annoying.

Hey tanks have uses in PvP ...... Yes being annoying is one but that annoying power allows the DPS players to sneak up and get the jump on the enemies. Worked countless times for me and my group :p

If it works it works. After all the job of a tank is to SUPPORT the the team and not be these stupid wanna be immortal cheese players with still OP malubeth and black rose wanting to tank 1vX and one shot everything. No there is no and it's or people learn the roles tanks are not meant to deal the damage they are meant to take it.

Job would be easier if penetration got nerfed or HA got a passive to reduce penetration effects and the resistance mitigation cap got raised.

Oh make no mistake, I fully appreciate the uses of tanks in PvP =X (being one myself). Fasallas works wonders when ur being smacked by a zerg or 2. Makes them siege/bomb food.
