I seem to tickle players in PvP but get one shot myself. Am I missing something?

XB1 player. I was previously VR3 before the update.

I quit because I became burned out. I logged in a while ago, pre-update, to see if the game would spark my interest again. I went to Cyrodiil and tried to rotate my spells effectively but found that I was doing pathetic amounts of damage to enemies (no exaggeration here, I could barely scratch them). The moment they connected on me I was toast, single players just 2/3 shotting me. That was enough of that and my hiatus continued.

I saw that the game had been updated and am interested in giving it another go. I played earlier today but the same thing happened and I got absolutely trounced. Am I missing something?

I play Sorcerer with 40 magicka, 20 health and 4 stamina.

I see some people taking an absolute pounding and holding their own and I'm completely baffled as to how? Any help is appreciated.

Side question: is everyone scaled to champion 150 in Cyrodiil?

Everyone under 160 champion points yes. Try going into a "Non-Champion point" campaign. You will enjoy it much more. The disparity between a 501 CP character and a 0-160 cp character is HUGE. It's better than it was tho. Back before IC only players under lvl 50 were battle leveled. Meaning V1-14 were free AP. I helped many an Emperor get to their throne then...

Magicka sorcerers, especially with an inefficient build, are now in a difficult spot. The game as a whole isn't terribly well balanced anyway, you can stack a lot of damage, or a lot of mitigation if you know exactly what you're doing. Unless you're at the top of your game you'll struggle with the class in PVP. Here are some tips though:
-Sharpened trait on weapons is currently very strong.
-Stack sharpened with having at least 5 pieces light for the extra spell penetration.
-Magic damage in ESO is tied to both your Spell damage stat and maximum magicka. You need to have all the points in magicka, with appropriate glyphs on your equipment.
-For good damage build you have to have high spell damage, high max magicka and high crit chance. Your numbers should be something like 3k spell damage (buffed), 35k max magicka and >50% crit as a baseline.

-Use defensive abilities, like Defensive rune, sword & shield Defensive posture and Medium armour skill Shuffle to give yourself more of a chance.
-In PVP most players run a lot of critical chance. To mitigate against them you need to have impenetrable armour pieces and/or other forms of critical damage reduction (champion points, Transmutation set, damage shield).
-Radiant magelight gives you some protection against attacks from stealth.

Yea your going into a gun fight with a knife with your level and CP's. You need to play the non-CP campaign like stated above or just quest and level up.

and you need to optimize your build. There is no reason for any character (apart from a tank) to have anything invested in health.

Wear impen and get some penetration; light armour already has some but also sharpened trait and a cp line (can't remember name). Also Elemental Drain or whatever it's called from destro skill line.

I have 2 vet sorcs (I only play sorc really)
if a player has no impen I can very often kill them with my opening burst.

We're squishy this patch because of a ton of factors I won't get into. Don't expect to survive long once a stamnb/stamdk is up in your face. You can either burst them to death, or you're probably going to die, or they suck if you're lucky and then it doesn't matter what you do. The best way to survive on a sorc is to be in a good position, don't get caught out of position. Keep terrain advantage, watch your surroundings and be aware of all sides of you.

Like others have said, run radiant magelight (NOT inner light) and at least impen on small pieces (boots, gloves, belt, shoulders) preferably on all 7 but if you have 4+ and a solid number of CP in resistant it'll prevent you from taking crits the size of your entire health pool (typically it'll even prevent you from entering execute range)

I like to run purple tri stat food, if you have health under 20k you are screwed but you don't want points in health. If you run out of stamina you are dead in the next 5 seconds but you again don't want points in stamina (trivial difference) since in fact the issue is stam regen not stam max.

It helps if you keep a stack of tri pots and [immovable + stealth detect] pots for tricky situations, if you don't like farming pots you could slot immovable from heavy skill line but personally I don't like giving up this slot. My skill bars are more or less pure murder.

Main bar: Frags, curse, wrath, entropy, radiant magelight + ice comet
Off bar: crushing, annulment, streak, [purge/rapids/proxy det], boundless + [negate/devoring swarm/overload]

I play honest to god glass cannon, it won't work for you if you're low CP because you won't be able to kill your opponent and they will murder you even if you outplay them. You might be able to make it work in a big group. It's also very unforgiving of mistakes and being perfectly honest since you're new you should play the more forgiving [destro/restro] with more defensive abilities slotted.

Oh I forgot to add, on top of the bonus from the CP trees themselves, CP scales your max stats. When you see people posting stuff like 40k magicka in the same set you're wearing, it's because you're missing 5 - 7k magicka from CP

Many comments here are for end game and subtle tweaking of builds.

    You need some beginning advice.

    1. Almost ALL builds stack ALL attributes into stam or magicka. Let's just skip the small percent and say you need to go all 64 into magicka.
    2. Gear is huge, you need some Julianos, Twice born, type gear, All Max magicka glyphs
    3. For a sorc and simplicity run one of the magicka boost toggles, bound aegis or innerlight
    4. Use hardened ward like your life depends on it (it does)

I personally run x5/x4 alchemist x3/x5 Julianos so in combat im running around 40k magick and 4500 spell damage with 1700 magicka regen.

Go full magicka and maintain shields constantly. My magicka sorc is personally running a setup along the lines of (stat-wise):

    23k Max Health
    46k Max Magicka
    2.1 Spell Damage
    1.7k Magicka Recovery

    That's unbuffed.

If you're below 300-350 CP then either grit your teeth and push through the vet campaigns until you build your CP up or just hop onto a non-CP campaign (BWB or, ideally, Azura's Star).

CP Makes a HUGE difference, but so does learning a char too. You can't just jump on a char after a hiatus and expect to be golden on them straight way, you need time to learn the mechanics and play it effectively.

As has been previously stated by others, anything below 20k max health in PVP is a no-go.

Practice, practice, practice and build up your character. You'll get a lot better a lot quicker.

Also as a tip for your sorc, focus more on Max Magicka than you would on Spell Damage, since this directly translates into resource pool, damage AND shield strength.

Also keep in mind that if the people coming at you are Stamina Nightblades, just accept your fate with dignity and hope not to see them again. Even with my shields and my DPS, if they CC me when I have no stamina to break free I'm just basically a saggy sack of AP to collect. At least with other classes I seem to have a chance before I die.

Sets-wise, don't bother with crap like Clever Alchemist etc., you'll find you're too reliant on potions and your damage is far too inconsistent; if you can't burst them down in the time Alchemist has proc'd you're just going to get steamrolled whilst waiting for your pot to come off of cooldown, and a decent player won't give you a good enough opportunity to burst them down in that timeframe because they'll be applying high enough pressure of their own, or blocking LOS. Also don't bother with Julianos unless you're focusing purely on crit-burst damage, otherwise it's quite redundant to be honest.

If you're looking for decent sets to get your hands on when you're not well-aged into the game then look into either Seducers or Magnus, or a mixture of the two. These will give you decent stats and good +Max Magicka and they're only 3 and 4 traits respectively. If you have a crafter available to make one for you then these are the sorts of sets you should be interested in:
    • 3 Traits - Seducer's (Max Magicka + Magicka Recovery)
    • 4 Traits - Magnus (Max Magicka + Spell Damage + Recovery)
    • The above two will give more resource pool and higher sustainability, which will help a ton.
    • 6 Traits - Juliano's (Spell Damage + Spell Crit) - Decent on high-burst crit-based builds. Redundant if you want high sustainability to be honest.
    • 7 Traits - Clever Alchemist (Spell Damage + Health + Spell Damage) - This is really only good for HIGH burst builds, but you'll find yourself dishing out inconsistent damage and reliant on a small timeframe to kill enemies. Outside of the timeframe it's pointless.
    • 8 Traits - Kagrenac's Hope (Spell Damage + Magicka Recovery + Max Magicka + Max Health) - Personally I think this set excels in a lot of things. You'll get almost the same Spell Damage boost as Juliano's, whilst receiving Health, Magicka and Recovery to boot.

Outside of these sets I don't really feel any are worth mentioning. Your best bet is Seducers + Magnus if you want sustain, which may be your better option for now until your CP grows and you can properly dishout the high burst damage.

    Anyway, good luck.
