If by "shadowmancer" you mean a caster type who utilizes stealth then absolutely.

Magicka Night Blades have lots of viable builds. For a simple version:

    7x Light Armor
    Bar 1: Inferno Staff
    Bar 2: Resto Staff

Bar 1 has your combat skills including Destro staff powers and Nightblade abilities like Impale, Crippling Grasp and Reaper's Mark

Bar 2 has buffs and heals and stealth for when you need to pop out of a fight to recover, so Dark Cloak, Healing Ward, etc.

Use "hide" (crouching) to get into position and open with a Heavy Destruction Staff attack or Concealed Weapon if you can creep in close and then then nuke them down and/or vanish as needed to buy time to get back your resources.

En is heavy armor plausible in such a build?

You might have some magicka issues, but it is plausible. Pick a race with good magicka perks like High Elf or Breton.
This game is pretty forgiving to casual players, so almost any combination will work.

5x Light + 2 heavy is a pretty common layout too, with the 2 Heavy as Chest and Legs (which have the highest Armor ratings).

Going all Heavy or even 5 heavy + 2 light on a Magicka build will be a little harder to manage since you're not getting as much punch out of your Light Armor passives (so less magicka, less magicka regen, less spell penetration). With Champion points and set bonuses you can make up for some of that though and the added durability may work better for your play style.

As Cillion3117 said, PvE is pretty friendly and you should be able to level with a lot of different setups. It's not till you get into the higher end dungeons or trials that your performance will really start being tested. And of course there's PvP where skill matters, but there's a lot of skillful people in excellent gear so you expect to get your face bashed in until you develop both your skill and your build.
