High elf sorceror: heavy armor or light armor?

hi im somewhat new to the game and i have been using heavy armor so far just to keep myself alive but is it worth it in the end to switch to light armor to use the passive abilities when higher ranked? or just stick with heavy?

5 pieces of light, 1 heavy, and 1 medium. Unlock the Undaunted passive "Undaunted Mettle".

I would play around with the formula and see what works best for you.
Ask yourself- Do I need more survivability? More DPS?. Also consider, sorcerer has skills that can increase your physical/magical resistance naturally.

Personally, I swap it out depending on what I'm doing. If I'm DPS or Healer, I'll rock full light to get the most of Evocation. If I'm Tanking, I may throw on some heavy for added survivability.

Play around with it and see what works for you.

As a Sorcerer you will definitely need 7 light armor pieces. Heavy armor won't help at all because you will be using Hardened Ward to protect yourself, and any damage that spills through your Ward, is unaffected by your armor rating. So there is no reason whatsoever to use any pieces of heavy armor. Even if you plan on taking a Wrecking Blow or Crystal Frag to the face without your shields up, 2 heavy armor pieces won't save you then either.

With a caster using 5 light is not better it is essential for anyone actually trying to be decently effective in end game PVE.If you are just messing around solo you can do whatever you want.

for tank light belt, med gloves + 5 heavy.
