Questions about Imperial Templar Leveling/Tanking

Hey guys, first post on here. I was a log time WOW player. Rolled a human warrior tank at MT through Vanilla, Burning Crusade and a little bit of Wrath. This is my first foray back into MMO's. I've done some research and decided to roll an Imperial Templar that I would like to be able to tank eventually at end game. I was always intrigued my paladin tanks in wow so would like to maybe do something similar here.

I don't have much knowledge of the game yet as I've just started. I just want to be on the right track. Where should I put my attribute points while leveling? What skills should be be looking at. As imperial do I worry about Stam? Or focus on magika and Heath? Should I be building up eventual tanking skills now or something else to help leveling faster. I will try to solo as much as I can but will run groups with some friends whenever I have the opportunity.

I guess I am just confused as there seems to be major differences between when the game came out and the 1.6 patch back in April. So if I research I get conflicting reports. Thanks in advance for any help and info.

one major difference in this game after 1.6 is that they took out soft caps so nowadays you can't have too much of one stat. i came back to this game after that patch and they also increased your stats which at release (and when i quit) were like 10x less than what they are now (ie. i used to have 2.5k hp and now i have 25k when i came back). so watching old videos or reading old threads may confuse you if the numbers seem very low.

as for your stats, any stat you are deficient in can be made up for with gear and food.

while leveling, i've honestly not had issues with any stat setup because i would just make sure i had the right gear and enchants on that gear to make up for the stats i needed. you can always respec for cheap later on if you see fit.

for reference i have an NB i built for DPS that i put all points in stamina but i still tank with her very effectively because my gear has HP. my healer templar with 50/50 magicka HP can also tank with the right gear. my DK and lowbie imperial characters i put all points in HP because epeen.

as for leveling your skills, all you need to tank early game is just puncture (taunt skill, first one in 1h/shield line). rest of your skills, i'd focus on damage dealing abilities in other skill lines (puncturing sweep, reflective light, blazing spear). have two sets of gear; one for grinding, one for tanking. your grinding gear should always have 1 piece of each type of armour at least so you're leveling their respective skill trees as you level.

EDIT: also, if you're not aware, at 15 you can swap weapons in combat so you don't have to always use 1h/shield when leveling. on my templar i used to level with 2h then swap to 1h/shield. you get so many skill points in this game as you level and explore, you can easily level multiple weapon lines (my templar is maxed on 4 of them).

Thanks! This is all very helpful. So would you recommend putting lots of attribute points towards health and then using armor to help boost magika?
