New to Game,Templar Healing Help

hey guys I'm new to the game and trying to make a templar healer. i haven't played an mmo in awhile and I'm getting that irritating feeling I'm going to screw up a build royally haha. I'm just looking for any help on what a good build is now. Ive looked up a lot online but most posts seem to be outdated. so far my build kind of looks like this.

Breath of life
healing ritual
regeneration

Instance wise, which heals are your bread and butter when trying to keep a group alive?

I've also unlocked puncturing strike to start working on the aedric spear skill tree and sun fire for the dawns wrath tree. i don't know if i should be using other weapons besides the restoration staff. any help is greatly appreciated, and thank you in advance!

Breath of Life is the only heal I use 95% of the time, coupled with Extended Ritual for the Focused Healing passive. Don't bother with Healing Ritual, it's the worst skill in the game. Regeneration is nice but never needed, especially if you're a Templar.

The only other healing skill of note is Healing Springs, as in some situations there's too many people taking damage at the same time for Breath of Life to heal effectively.

Combat Prayer is worth looking into but in practice I find it too clunky to use unless you have a bunch of people stacked in one spot for prolonged periods of time, which doesn't happen except in Trials.

For Templars Repentance is also important, although it's used more for its stamina restore than its healing. Still, free healing is nothing to sneeze at.

Thanks for the response HappyCat. So when healing a group are you pretty much just spamming breath of life and thats enough to keep everyone healed? Also what do you recommend for other skills then? Should i be leveling other weapons besides the restoration staff?

Except in specific circumstances (PvP and Trials) you should never do nothing but heal as a healer. When I'm not healing I'll be spamming Blazing Spear for AoE DPS (and for others to pick up for stamina), weaving Crushing Shock to lock down a dangerous mob, or using Radiant Oppression to finish off low health mobs and provide the group with Minor Sorcery. Every now and again I'll cast Repentance to turn dead bodies into stamina.

Other things you can do include debuffing mobs with Elemental Drain, casting Mystic Orb for your allies to restore magicka, Combat Prayer to increase everyone's DPS... really, there's no end to jobs for a healer to do.

In terms of other weapons, I suggest levelling destro staff at some point to unlock Elemental drain.... this helps your magicka DPS group members with magicka sustain.

Mage Light in the mages guild line is pretty much standard for any magicka user... it provides more crit chance and the Inner Light morph gives you more max magicka.

Blazing spear is handy for supporting stam hungry dps and stam weak tanks.... it provides a synergy that grants team mates stamina upon activation.

Nova is probably the best Ultimate in the game for End game raids..... well any instance really. Damage mitigation + good damage.

And Force Siphon from the Resto line.... it can be a pain to use sometimes with the casting time, but once you morph it to Siphon Spirit, it adds passive healing to anyone attacking the boss and more magicka sustain for DPS... Survival + more DPS = GOLD!

Awesome, so as far as other weapons like maces ,swords etc… and even shields are they not worth leveling as a dedicated healer? i Will definitely look into the skills both of you mentioned. i guess my one worry is making a wrong choice. can you completely screw up a build in this game?

You can respec for a hefty sum of gold. The only things you can't change are you class and race, but it seems like even your race will be changeable through the Crown Store in the future.

You should at least level 1H and Shield because some end-game content requires the healer to off-tank. Dual Wield is actually not a bad idea for Templar healers because dual wielding gives more spell power than staves, but you won't be using any Dual Wielding skills if you do that so leveling it or not doesn't matter.

Your two main heals should be Breath of Life and Healing Springs (morph of Grand Healing from Restoration Staff). Breath of Life is the so called "oh s**t"-button for instant healing a low health player.
Leveling Destruction Staff is a good idea, but not a must have, since a templar healer can do nice damage with class skills only.
Besides that try to keep buffs and debuffs up all the time (Combat Prayer and Siphon Spirit are recommended by me).
You can also keep regeneration up, but I don't like that skill^^

When everyone is at full health, keep the buffs up and do as much damage as possible (Spear Shards for AoE, Radiant Destruction/Crushing Shock for single target)

thanks for all the info guys. i guess my last question for now would be how many skill points do you get? did i mess up by spending a point in healing ritual? short of spending the large amount of gold in the future to fix it

You will have more than enough skill points. I maxxed out 4 crafting skill lines, two weapon skill lines, unlocked all class skills and still have 48 skill points left
