DK weapon choice help please

So I'm new. and doing some research I'm going to go dark elf DK.
I want to be balanced and viable in PvE and PvP. So my question is weapon choice. For PvE I was thinking sword and shield. And for PvP either 2 handed sword or duel weild.

But is that viable or should I use a bow or a staff?


I hate asking things like this. But being an adult, I get only a few hours a week to play, and I don't want to waste to much time.

Do you want to tank or dps?
Sword and board is only going to benefit a tank really.

Do you want to be stamina or Magicka?
the choice will affect what weapon is best used for that build.

Thing is that the stam builds are preferred for PvP, and the magicka builds are preferred for PvE

This is hard to answer. I personally play with 1h/shield + X in pvp (X being anither 1h/shield set or destro staff) and playing tank (1h/shield again) or magicka dps in pve (destro staff). Keep in mind that 1h/shield is the worst choice if you want to do dps in pve.

Basically, weapon combos that work well:

magicka based - 1h/shield + staff (either staff), 2x staff, 2x 1h/shield, dual wield + X (because just equipping dual wiel gives you the highest spell damage)

stamina - 2h + bow, 1h/shield + X (more tanky approach), 2h + dual wield (2h for single target and dw for aoe damage)... have to admit, I don't know much about stamina builds.

Thanks! That did help some. I guess I would choose stamina. And mostly tank. So sword and shield for sure. I've never really liked magic. So stamina sword and shield and for the weapon swap option, 2 hander.

But that's what I'm wondering also is using 2 types of melee a waste. Should I use a bow?

Not a waste no because S&B will be defensive and 2H offensive. You can always try them out and see if you think you need to go with a range. Personally I think you'd be fine without a bow.

2H has a skill called critical rush and S&B has a sheild charge so you'll have options to quickly close the gap between targets. I'm thinking more about PvP here where hybrids can be very successful.

PvE wise you'll probably want to focus on tanking however. PvE groups have players filling specific roles usually. So you'd want S&B on both bars then as an example. If you wanted to focus on dps then like a 2H/DW or 2H/Bow setup for example.

Yes you are correct, redguard, imperial, nord or orc for extra tankyness. np anytime

You will need a gap closer that isn't DK chains for PvP. Either S/B or 2hand because DW doesn't have one. DK chains haven't worked for like half a year or more.

i didn't see anyone mention it (maybe they did) but the dark elf racial of +% to fire damage goes very very nicely with a magicka based destruction staff using DK. your PvE dps would be insane.

in this game, you're not really pigeon holed into one role because you decide to focus your attribute points into one or two pools. you can easily get the gear to augment the stats you are missing and be a magick/dps DK that can tank and heal when needed.

as an example, i have DK i'm leveling (argonian for the lulz) for whom i put all attribute points into health. but i carry 3 sets of gear for when i need to tank, dps or heal. he DPs/grinds/pvps with 2h. 2h line also has a gap closer move, fyi.
