There's an option in settings to make it so you can't hit friendly/neutral NPC's.

Really? Where? Please let me know!

The option is in Settings => Gameplay => 2nd to last Option called "Prevent Attacking Innocents".
It defaults to "off" instead of "on" because the developers are fairly stupid and never play test their changes.

This happened to me just yesterday! Usually when NPCs are also fighting the enemy, the are green so you can’t hit them and don’t have to worry. :( I really really wish that if you stop attacking and just hold block that they would stop attacking you, perhaps resulting in no bounty if it occurred during battle and a smaller (not kill on sight) bounty if it happened elsewhere. I don’t even care about the bounty, but I don’t want to kill the NPC and not crazy about letting myself be killed either as really neither is fitting.

I though that I had selected “Prevent attacking innocents” but I must not have. Does it make them immune to your aoe as well?
