Staff or 2 1handers for magicka build.....

I have been doing 2 1 hand swords after i noticed that when I equipped them I got another 242 spell power.

But something someone said hinted at a destro staff is better for magicka builds. Is there actually a logical reason staff is better? When I equip staff I would lose the 242'ish spell power so I'm curious if there is a mechanic with stalves I might be missing. I'm a templar magic dps build so was going for max spell power while wearing 5 heavy 2 light. Manage to pull off about 2300 spell power right now.

Depends entirely on your build, class, and what skills you are using.

V16 Derelict Vagabond EP Stamina DK
    V16 Redacted Ep Stam Sorc
    V16 Insolent EP Magicka Sorc(retired)
    V16 Jed I Nyte EP Stamina NB(retired)

Devil Beam, Vamp Bane, blazing spear/javelin then been playing with last couple spots, total dark, structured entropy, mage light, blazing shield.... to many options.

But thats my question if I use all templar spells whats the point in using a destro staff unless I want to use destro skills and lose spell power. Staff I would also lost a set bonus off my Torug's which is nice health boost. I pvp mostly, and my original design was more ranged dps, with 2nd bar setup as heals.

The passives are the key. Also, doing a heavy attack with 2 1handers will net you 0 gain in magicka recovery.

Nothing in the passives would really benefit templar spells, it mostly all effecting destro spells. Or am I missing something? Destructive Reach looks nice, have used it on my sorc and I like it.

Need this confirmed, but doesn't the Destro passive Elemental Force also apply to your solar and mage guild fire spells? The condition is if destro staff equipped and not on condition of a heavy attack or a destro skill's use. Also, again, heavy attacks from the staves will increase your magicka, which is vital to casting the majority of those templar spells.

Ya saw that, chance to apply burning effect, which would add a small dot chance right? So it would help with one spell, Sun Fire(vampire bane or reflective light morphs). Only thing i use from mage guild is structured entropy, small dmg dot and slight heal plus it passively gives 8% more hp and when active gives me 20% spell dmg, buts its magic dmg.

Is the heavy attack from staff a huge magicka regen buff? and how long is the regen buff from it?

It doesn't have to be one or the other.
If class/world damage spell spam, then 2 1-handers w/ torugs pact on both for impact.
If heavy attack spam, then Destro Staff.

Now combine them with weapon swap!
Cast your Templar DoT spells in a way that they will all hit at once, then after they hit, swap and free DPS/regen with your Destro Staff. If you need to heal or shield, keep those on the Destro Staff swap.

Someone remarked on my Templar magicka DPS being kinda insane. That's my secret. DW spell power nerf incoming, someday anyways!

If they nerf DW spell power instead of buffing Destro, I'm going to be so pissed. I don't want to give up that extra set bonus without getting something in return!

Ya i know that's the nice thing about running 2 1h's, set bonus extra spell power/weapon dmg. Personally they need to add counts as two for staffs and set bonus. Not sure they will buff more spell power on a staff, the trade off between fighting at distance vs danger of melee.... shrug

Though I think I kinda like that suggestion do both for by build, dual wield for primary, flip to destro for 1 heavy attack to start regen plus load my templar heal/shield/purify ritual.

Now to work on perfect spell setups.... how long the heavy attack mag regen buff?

You know if the buff the damage on the ranged destro staff they will have to buff bow back up to too right? Take your melee damage and be happy or come up with some kind of magic melee weapon otherwise this whole post is pointless buff range means stronger bows and that was nerfed with 1.6 thanks to you sorcs that QQ here about so get over use melee and only class and Mage guilds powers

None of you have came up with a melee Magic weapon so really just stop

To time out you go lizard!
I'm not really calling for buff to staffs. My original post is that I was curious if I was missing a hidden buff from using a staff over 2 melee weapons cause they give a big spell dmg bonus. Also magic users can make some pretty dang good magic ranged builds and still use melee weapons for the spell power on that build..... Also Chaos im not a sorc, I'm a templar and in your guild goober. (least i think you are same Chaos of Pride)

That being said, I wouldn't mind seeing any 2 Handed Weapon, staff, bow, great weapons be changed to count as 2 towards set bonuses.

When you see a post about magic assume sorcerer and go hard

But to answer your real question no you're not missing a buff you weapon and spell damage is now largely from your weapons and melee weapons do more damage then ranged so that why you have more with stamina melee weapons

That's a shame, that sorcs doesn't have an instant filler, and of need to use force pulse of destro staves.

The destro staff is useful for animation cancelling/weaving staff attacks. This will typically provide superior DPS on mobs with more than say 50% health when your Radiant morph will probably start to do higher damage which would make the extra spell power more valuable (as you cant weave a channeled spell).

It's worth noting that stygian daggers give spell damage as a two set bonus also, but you lose nirn trait assuming currently you use a crafted weapon...

Dual wield is most beneficial to NB, since sap essence is a class skill, we dont need a staff for our aoe ability, and can make use of the extra spell damage from dual wield. ^^

Honestly I havent' done magika build in a while, but yeah the passives and ranged weapon attacks are the two reasons. If you are proficient at weaving in light attacks before abilities (or took 20 seconds to set up a macro for it) then having a ranged weapon has some decent advantage. You're going to get in a light attack before each ability cast, without adding more time. And that's going to net what... 2k to 3k extra damage on a hit? Which, if you just add that into what you'd do on the ability cast with the extra spell damage... you're probably the same or higher than you'd do with two one handers. All depends on your play style though.

I run a duel wield magicka NB with destro on my second bar. I use my duel wield bar for aoe spells, melee spells, and my execute since I do not light attack weave with any of these skills. Therefore the added spell dmg is a plus. I prefer destro on my single target bar that I weave with because the damage you get from the light attacks makes up for the loss of spell damage.

I have tried the same set-up with templar and it has been successful in both PVE and to an extent PVP.

    My templar bars are:

duel wield: puncturing sweep, radiant ward, radiant oppression, channeled focus, mage light, crescent sweep

destro bar: vamp bane, dark flare, blazing spear, breath of life, mage light, nova
