Nothing in the passives would really benefit templar spells, it mostly all effecting destro spells. Or am I missing something? Destructive Reach looks nice, have used it on my sorc and I like it.

Take your melee damage and be happy or come up with some kind of magic melee weapon otherwise this whole post is pointless buff range means stronger bows and that was nerfed with 1.6 thanks to you sorcs that QQ here about so get over use melee and only class and Mage guilds powers
None of you have came up with a melee Magic weapon so really just stop
I have been doing 2 1 hand swords after i noticed that when I equipped them I got another 242 spell power.
But something someone said hinted at a destro staff is better for magicka builds. Is there actually a logical reason staff is better? When I equip staff I would lose the 242'ish spell power so I'm curious if there is a mechanic with stalves I might be missing. I'm a templar magic dps build so was going for max spell power while wearing 5 heavy 2 light. Manage to pull off about 2300 spell power right now.

The destro staff is useful for animation cancelling/weaving staff attacks. This will typically provide superior DPS on mobs with more than say 50% health when your Radiant morph will probably start to do higher damage which would make the extra spell power more valuable (as you cant weave a channeled spell).
