How does Whitestrakes dmg shield work?

Does anyone know if the Whitestrakes 5 piece set damage shield will activate if for example, I have 8000 of 16000 health left and I get hit by an attack that would do 9000 damage? Is it that because I go directly from 50%hp to 0%hp, that the shield would never activate?
