One handed and Shield!

Why can I not use those abilities without a shield? I mean, I can level up the skill line without a shield, why can I not use the abilities without one? I played 1h shield without the shield in beta (if memory serves me right) and was able to use the 1h abilities. ...I really wanted to be a swashbuckler fencer sort...

Might have something to do with being called one hand and shield ?
You can still use light/heavy.

Well there should be a 1h skill line... I don't care just let me use a 1h sword.

I believe you can. Nothing prevents you from using only a sword. I trust you will still earn some xp if some of the 1 handed & shield skills are slotted in your hot bars.

The only downside is that you won't be able to use / activate some of the active or passive skills of the 1 handed & shield tree that rely on the shield...

Just unequip the shield. Good to go, one armed pirate! As mentioned some abilities will not work like shield bash but you can work around them, how effectively I don't know.

Maybe look at duel wield and only equip one sword?

Probably not super effective either but something to compare with sword board skill line.
