Deep Slash debuffs the enemy with Minor Maim, meaning -15% damage, while Empowering Sweep buffs me with a 15% damage reduction shield, if I use them both do I take 30% less damage?

    Nope,

Lets say you have 20% mitigation from armour and take a hit dealing 1000 dmg

    1) Minor Maim reduces that damage by 15%. That's 850 dmg.

    2) Your armour/spell resistance mitigation comes into play and decreases the remaining damage further. That's 680 dmg.

    3) Damage reduction shield comes last and reduces the remaining amount of damage taken by 15%. That's 578 dmg left.

So with 20% Armour mitigation, 15% damage reduction from Minor Maim and 15% damage reduction from buffs, ennemies will hit you for 42,2% reduced damage.

So if you can only mitigate 50% of damage (no more than 50% dmg mitigation), 500 in this example... Then if the armor mitigation is higher such as 30%, then is it also accurate to say that maximum damage has been mitigated/reached with 2% semi-waste (emphasis on the semi)?

Also while spell resist scales with armor/physical resist, depending upon your setup you may have a greater amount of spell resist and therefore damage mitigation than physical. Yes/No?

I'm not sure the straight damage reduction limit on armor at 50% counts maim and other straight damage reduction abilities like sweep. Does it? I think blocking already can absorb more than 50% damage.

If thats how it works, it really makes shields still > than anything else defensively.

You can mitigate up to 50% damage with Armour/spell resist, but damage can still be mitigated further by using Minor Maim or Damage reduction passives/actives (or just by blocking). But the more mitigation you have, the less effective those effects become.

    For instance,

Someone with 0% mitigation from armour/spell resist would have the full benefit out of damage reduction effects while someone reaching the hard cap would only have halve the benefits from this effect since it only reduces the remaining damage taken and does not add up to the average mitigation from armour/spell resist.

For minor maim, the reduction is applied to target so the total amount of damage dealt by the opponent to you is lower meaning your armour/spell resist doesn't need to mitigate as much damage as it did before.
