It's the only time sink in crafting at all. Can't complain too much.

I wish crafting was more challenging in the first place, maybe I'd have more interest in it. As it is, almost everyone can craft almost everything.

LoL, I wish my traits were only taking a fortnight, I'm at the 25 or 30 day stage now. On the Bright side my Sorc had finished all the traits on woodcrafting except nirnhoned.

You'll get there. Only couple days away from having blacksmith, clothing and woodworking all 8-traits researched.

If they shortened the time it takes to make awesome armor then everyone would be running around in the best armor and those that waited months would be pissed, more so than you are... it's the chase that everyone needs so they keep paying, then once you can make that armor it's the satisfaction and bragging rights that keeps you paying and the fact that you can charge folks money :)

I'm not really pissed, just meh... The system is just a loyalty reward. I can accept it, but it seems like they could come up with a more challenging way to unlock these rewards if they actually thought about it. Research mini games or something. Just a thought.

I am currently research the ninth trait on several items (11 completed, 6 currently researching with 17 still waiting) and I long for the days when research completed in just two weeks.

All of Wood, Cloth Armor and Metal Armor - finished with all 9 done.

Back at Leather and Weapons now, most of which are at 8 researching, with a few at 9.

As was said, it's a loyalty thing.. been at it pretty religiously since launch, missed a few days here and there, but it takes time.

At least they added a 4th skill point to make sure you never go over 30 days.. ><

Well, the good news is, nothing beyond 6 trait sets are worth it. So the only reason to wait out those long timers is to be a completionist.

Too true, which really makes crafting and trait research a grind with no real benefit at the end. Sure hope some crafting changes are on the horizon. Otherwise, it's a big disappointment. The hype on crafting was one of the reasons I got the game. :'(

My reason is I can have 7 traits known on an item and someone seems to only want the one trait I don't know.

For sure the 8 Trait sets are kind of meh. Although the set that you can make in Craglorn is kind of decent (not the Twice Born Star but the 8 Trait set). However for the most part, 5 and 6 trait sets are where the most benefit comes.

So, my advice is to not research any 7th or 8th trait until you have 6 traits researched in the craft line that is important to you.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

I could be completely wrong here; but that nine trait Twice Born Star set might have some value once the Champion System is activated. I am also holding out hope that the Imperial City and Wrothgar will unleash some new sets or crafting changes that make the 8/9/10(?) trait sets enviable and sought after. Adding a bonus to the crafted sets that applies only to the crafter would also be another way to reward those players who have researched eight or nine traits.

Well, I've got 8 traits researched on everything for blacksmithing, woodworking, and clothing (still don't have any nirnhoned), so I laugh at your 2 weeks! But yeah, for me it's more about being a completionist than anything else, so as soon as I get my hands on some nirnhoned stuff without paying an arm and a leg for it, I'll be researching those 9th traits...

Finishing off my gaps in research myself (I have all the traits covered, just spread across several alts) I lack Nirnhoned too, you just don't see them in the Guild stores (probably because the stone are a pain too).

All of Wood, Cloth Armor and Metal Armor - finished with all 9 done.

But that over different toons?... Only all 9th traits done on Wood myself. Clothing and Blacksmith longer due to much more items. It a great challege doing researching on one toon (Enchanting, Wood, Cloth and Blacksmithing - I have all 6 crafting at max lvl (50)). Its slow and inv chaos but its also fun for some of us. Now wish they get Jewlry making added!

Unless they took advantage of a game bug shortly after the release last spring, it is not possible to have completed research for all nine traits for every item on a single character. If multiple characters are involved, then it is certainly possible that a player has all nine traits researched for all 34 items.

Rand, It's all on one toon, my other alts learned everything that the main toon needed (outside of Nirnhoned) so I could just make them whenever a timer was up on the main instead of having to find them or store them.

As far as having all 9 learned everywhere on one toon… it has to be pretty close for those people that did it religiously, as in within a month or two. Been playing since Beta, not sure what bug you mean… what did I miss?

Hmm, let's do some math. If you assume that you power-leveled your crafting skills to get the maximum research passives before you start research then the amount of time it takes to research each trait on each item is as follows (in hours):
    Trait 1: 4.5
    Trait 2: 9
    Trait 3: 18
    Trait 4: 36
    Trait 5: 72
    Trait 6: 144
    Trait 7: 288
    Trait 8: 576
Trait 9: 720 (due to the cap being 30 days with the last point in the passive)

So that's a grand total of 1867.5 hours (just under 78 days) to get all 9 traits on a single item. With the maximum passives you can research 3 items per craft at the same time.

Woodworking has only 6 items to research traits for (shield, bow, resto staff, the 3 varieties of destro staves), so it'll take just under 156 days to get all 9 traits on all of them (it'll take 2 sprints of researching traits on 3 items at a time to complete them all).

Blacksmithing has 14 items to research traits for (the 7 different heavy armour pieces, and the 7 different weapons), so it'll take just over 389 days to get all 9 traits on all of them (it'll take 4 sprints of researching traits on 3 items at a time, followed by 1 sprint of researching traits on the 2 remaining items to complete them all).

Clothing has 14 items to research traits for (the 7 different light armour pieces, and the 7 different medium armour pieces), so it'll take just over 389 days to get all 9 traits on all of them (it'll take 4 sprints of researching traits on 3 items at a time, followed by 1 sprint of researching traits on the 2 remaining items to complete them all).

As you can do these 3 professions simultaneously on the same character, all we need to look at is the greatest amount of time across the 3 professions to see the minimum amount of time to get all 9 traits on every single item using just 1 character.

Minimum time: 9,337.5 hours, or just over 389 days.

Of course, that assumes absolutely zero down time between finishing research on 1 trait and beginning research on the next, and it assumes that you start off with the maximum research passive (which is impossible, as the best research passive didn't exist at launch), and you still end up with significantly longer than a full year to do it.

As the game has not been out for a year yet, it's definitely impossible that anyone could have achieved all 9 traits on every item with a single character - at least it's impossible without having benefited from a bug.

Thanks for the math but you base it on the current 25% time reduction passive skill which did not go live until Update 4 in mid-September. Before then, 20% was the maximum time reduction. That pushes back the completion date even further. Either way, it will probably be May before someone has all traits researched for all items on a single character, provided they did so legitimately.

And yes, there was a bug/exploit back in April/May that dramatically reduced research time. It was quietly and quickly fixed. If someone had traveled down that path, they would be able to finish the research of nine traits on all items sometime this month.
