Trial of the Ghost Snake - NO RATS!

Ok, I'm pretty sure I should be able to see rats with Grass turned off in my graphics settings. I can see squirrels, rabbits, caterpillars and all other sorts of bugs on the ground but these rats that are supposed to be collected in this circle are just out right missing in action!

Well there are many "Bog Rats" but the Critter bag doesn't give me the dialog for catching them. Killing them does nothing and doesn't even produce loot. I tried using the critter bag from my inventory and that didn't work either. The YouTube video I saw for this quest shows actual small black rats and they're just called "Rats" and a dialog pops up with the [E] option when you mouse over them.

Weird. Before the last patch, they were the small rats that looked like the rats you can find all over the place. After the patch, which was also after I had already completed the quest, I saw the bog rats, which were definitely not there before. I figured they made them bigger so they'd be easier to see. I would report it as a /bug and come back later.

I have attacked the Bog rats and the dialog for catching them never showed up. Also the YouTube video on the subject even shows the Rats and they are not the Bog Rats.

Well the dialogue only pops up if they have a little bit of health and your targeting cursor is on them (or in my case I was facing them exactly right).

If you are doing that and still not getting an "E to use capture sack" message, then your only choice is to raise a ticket or abandon the quest. Either way Best of luck.

Well I'm kinda miffed that they removed the third option of letting his assistant become the trader in the options even after talking to everyone I was only given the same two choices.

Did you talk to her before you made the decision, because I did that choice about a week ago, and selected her, but you had to talk to her first so she could suggest it.

Yes, I talked to all of the people and she did suggest it but when I went back to talk to the leader I wasn't given the option to tell her the alternative. No biggie. I just completed it and let the idiot elf live.

Oh but he was SUCH an idiot he was amusing. I'm just glad I had the option to give it to the gal.

And, yeah, those microscopic bog rats have been swapped out for skeevers.

Sorry for necro-thread! I'm trying to complete this quest but having no luck - once I start the quest, there are bog rats everywhere - I have tried approaching them when they are neutral (yellow) and nothing happens. I have also tried to kill them but they don't drop anything. Any idea what I should do next?

You should be able to just approach them and press E/A/X to bag them up. If that's not working, you could try abandoning the quest and logging off for 15 minutes to allow the area to do a soft reset.

Re-necroing thread for the benefit of those who may still have problems. The rat's for the quest are "Bog Rats" that initially appear neutral (yellow highlight). They are bigger then the ones in most of the older videos, and are relatively easy to see (adjusting your Contrast apparently helps...I had no issues seeing them with my default setup).

There are 2 ways you can capture them:
    1) crouch until you are hidden (the "hidden" tag appears next to your reticule). you can sneak up on them that way and the action icon should appear to bag them.

    2) fight them until they are at or under 30% health...they will stop fighting and you will have the option of bagging them. NOTE: they will still show as red! don't wait for them to change to green or yellow...watch for the action/bag icon to appear!

That's it! once I figured this out, it was an easy quest. Hope this helps someone. Here's a link to some screenies so you can have visual reference:

Yeah that's a bit different from how it used to be when the thread was created. They were previously the same size as normal rats, and attacking them would instantly kill them (as they were critters with only 9 HP). It's definitely easier to do what you need to do, but anyone who is following old guides may get confused that the mechanics are no longer the same.

I had the same problem some days ago, couldn't find them cause I was looking for the very small rats.

Yesterday I tried again on those big rats after reading this thread. I lowered their health and pressed E and it worked.
