Hi,
New player here and I am completely overwhelmed with the freedom of choice we have with talents, and I love it. Im just not too sure where to go for some starter skills and builds...could any of you help me out?

Im not even sure what class Im going to be spending most of my time in...so if you could provide me some insight on what you think a starter/leveling build should look like for your respective class, that would be appreciated! And by starter, I mean levels 5 through 10 at least.

Thanks!

In general it is wise to level up all three directions of the class skill-lines. So make sure you slot an ability from all the different skill lines into the actionbar so you receive exp to all of them.

You can also start leveling up all the armor types too. So have at least 1 piece of the other 2 armor types your not focusing on equipped.

So later on you have all your class specific abilities to choose from when you start figuring out your mid - endgame builds.

Also make sure you take time to think about your skill morph choices. It is very expensive to go back and change a morph for a single skill, as you need to make a full respec just for that.

See, thats good advice. Me being a dummy I wouldnt have thought of that.

BTW, Nuke Cola from the GW2 forums?

Not anymore. You can respec only morphs now.

What I usuallly do at first: one skill in each class tree and two weapons (to keep both on my bar and start levelling them even before I get weapon swap). An ultimate. Persuade, Intimidate and Silver Bolts. Any remaining points into morphs or new class/weapon skills if I know it's something I'll need right away (like Talons or Veiled Strike). Then I start putting points into passives.

It really would help if you at least told us what role you're planning. There is no starting class build - my two nightblades shared a grand total of two actives until higher levels.

There is lots of skill points so you can test various builds, if you are unhappy you can respec, but that is only needed early in the game.

On average, if I equip something from every skill line, how long does it take to max out that skill line? What level can I expect to be when that happens?

Quite a long time. It goes faster the more skills from the same line you use, so for the less frequently used lines you're looking at some point around veteran ranks. In fact, my VR1 character maxed out only one class and one weapon tree, other are lagging a bit (I don't remember armor, but it might be at or near 50 as well).

Currently playing a templar. Not sure if I will play it indefinitely. Id like to try out all classes, but I see tons of nightblades and sorcerers running around. I don't want to be one of many.

Also, question...do we have true build freedom? Or are there one or two cookie cutter optimal specs per base class? As a templar can I build him completely the way I want, for example, using a bow and whatever else I want and STILL be viable? rather than typical sword/board or 2hander?

Now here's a trick you can use and i recommend it for leveling skills fast. You probably will need only one bar full of skills to level up and complete quests. So these important skills you use will get maxed out fast.

So this leaves the other action bar for skills you are not using but still need to level up. Also keep a weapon your not maxed out in here.

What you do is when your about to turn in your quest, you change your active bar to the one with all the skills you need to level up.

This way the quest inspiration is not wasted on already maxed out skills. And you will always develop something new.

Erm, I assume inspiration = XP?

Yes. All the skills you have in your active skillbar, your weapon in hand and armor you have on at the moment will get this boost.

Is it normal to be magicka starved early on? I can't engage mob after mob without waiting a few seconds...I won't have enough magicka to do anything.

I am putting all points into magicka.

Is the XP gained spread across all skills? Or do they all receive the same amount? I.e...if I removed all skills and only used one, will that skill receive more XP than if I had a bar full of skills?

Maybe depends on class . I play the sorcerer and it didn't really bother me at all. Everything intended as soloable content including bosses are no problem at all. I used a build that uses only 2 spells in combat and ran with it all the way to Craglorn.

I was under the impression that inspiration points were crafting XP?
