Has anyone built an avoidance tank with any success? Just curious If it was even possible or if you strictly need to run sword an board.

I think it's possible via lots of Evasion spam and literal dodging
Bobbity Boop, this game might become poop, but I'll still play because I'm just a pile of goop!

I was thinking blur+avoidance Sparks for Charged attacks but I cant put a finger on what I can do for magic attacks. Aoe is obvious you just move. Making a magical boss attack miss from an active dodge would be extremely difficult to replicate numerous times during a fight.

I also feel as though maybe I wouldn't do enough DPS since my hotbar would be literally full of Defensive abilities and the taunt from undaunted tree

When I tank on my Nightblade, I use avoidance gear like hist bark, and skills like evasion.

I have also 'tanked' a few vet dungeons with my bow, making use of the increased speed after rolling. That was interesting... And fun.

So I would say that it's possible. And very interesting.
This one has an eloquent and well thought out response to tha... Ooh sweetroll!

just looking for something more interesting and involved than just holding block and aoe spam/taunt loose adds. Avoidance seems fun maybe a whitestrakes set will do nicely for this.

it can be done. iv seen it... but its VERY hard to pull off.

use evasion sets like hist bark, go DW and make use of sparks if you want. pick te NB and make use of evasion and blur. other than that, you better get ready to do LOTs of rolling, meaning, I order to do this, you cant go 0-49-0 and put all your enchants into magic like most players do. you have to put some stuff into stamina.

other than that, be sure to stay healed!

Full hist bark in full medium, while evasion is active. This gives a %50 dodge rating, the highest achievable dodge rating save for the %100 given by dodge roll.

Side note, blur, sparks, and blind flashes have limited usefulness vs mobs. However, those moves are useless against bosses. Bosses are immune to miss. Dodge rating and miss chance are 2 different effects. One is considered a defensive buff, while the other is an offensive debuff.

I effectively Dual Wield tank on my NB in 7/7 Medium, and have done so for months and months... It is very effective and a great way of having additional dps for groups who may be lacking a bit in that area... The trick is using both weapon to be fully effective. I run with either DW+2Hand or DW+DW in order to maintain an even keel of defense to offense.

When it comes to evasion tanks some people seem to overlook the DK. You can still run MA + Sparks/EmberExplosion + the MA Active skill and whatever sets, but you can also throw cinder storm into the mix which increases miss chance by 30%. I think running 1h+shield is still a good idea for backup, but I was able to avoid a good amount of damage when my DK was specced for evasion tanking

Miss chance debuffs don't work against bosses/harder mobs AFAIK, so it's not really a viable alternative to passive mitigation.
