Clarification on Keep Defense Bonuses

ZoS, would you please shed some light on the issuing of keep defense bonuses. They seem rather random in the time after a keep is successfully defended, and sometimes aren't even given.
I for one do not enjoy sitting in a keep after it's fully repaired waiting for a bonus. We shouldn't have to pick between further assisting the fight, and getting a sometimes huge bonus... Considering I've gotten bonuses up to 39,000 AP, they're definitely worth waiting for in some cases... but also rather boring...
