It wasn't ZOS's decision, it was the decision of the companies with boxes left. It's after launch, so most people who want the game already bought it, the stores just want to get rid of the extras.

Some retailers have it for 50% off. Amazon and Gamestop are both selling the retail box for $29.99 right now. My guess is that they probably bought too many retail copies through their distributor and are trying to dump them since they aren't selling fast enough to justify taking up warehouse/shelf space.

Digital copies are still selling at full price.

You think Amazon has half price just cause they have sold out or because they can't get rid of it?

    So much of the above.

But yeah, a retailer determines price. In this case Amazon.... wait a minute, they are offering all sorts of things at discount. Why is Amazon selling things so cheap? The must be doing very poorly and desperate for money, according to the OP's logic.

This is pretty common for any title. They want to get the most money out of a title that's newly released, then reduce it to draw in those people that were hesitant spending money on a game immediately in case they didn't like it. Half-off a game is simply incentive for those people to try the game.

    No. Its 60% off.
    Www.greenmangameing.com has 20% off coupon.
They also had this at launch of eso. The ice was 62 not 80. And 48 for standard on launch day. This is where I got mine.
    81. As for price drop. Three months old, it happens and its summer or xmas. 2nd quarter sales stocks are due soon.
    82.

Hit the nail on the head. Shame this has to be pointed out everytime the retail box for an MMO goes on sale.. including the last time any retailers had sales on ESO (cause that was posted here too, in a similar fashion, actually).

Um. Again, retailers decide how much they sell things for. Not publishers or manufacturers.

ZoS has nothing to do with how much or how little Amazon sells things for. Pointing out this fact has nothing to do with being a "fan boy". And this thread, in turn, has nothing to do with reality.

Sometimes stores have sales. This is especially common for video games early on. I got BioShock for half off a few months after it launched, and considering the steam sale that followed, I paid too much.

What is even the purpose of this thread? Does it have a point? Do you want something?

Not exactly. Publishers actually do have some control over retail pricing. Most publishers/manufacturers will have an MSRP (Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price) and often a MSP (Minimum Sale Price) tied to their products. The MSRP is what they suggest retailers price at, this is flexible and why you'll often see retailers undercutting each other on the retail price by a few dollars here and there. The MSP is the minimum price they'll allow all retailers to sell their product at. If a retailer wants to run a promotion that drops below the MSP, they need to get authorization from the manufacturer.

I can't say that I know what the MSP for this game is, but chances are Gamestop and Amazon's marketing teams got permission from Zenimax to drop below the MSP to clear out their excess inventory of retail boxes.

Extremely common for MMOs. So much so that I see this type of thread during every MMO launch, in fact. Especially with the rise in popularity of purchasing games digitally. Yay forums.
