agreed - nice to see it fixed - was frustrating for a long time
that said my understanding is that it couldn't be hot fixed, that the issue was 'interwoven' with a number of other AOE game mechanics and that a serious amount of coding and recoding, then testing and retesting was needed to ensure they weren't breaking/unbalancing other stuff whilst fixing this
so though many cry 'enough with that the the game is new - it's not an excuse' - the game IS new, and it's not always a matter of flipping a switch to turn something on/off that's broken in game
looking forward to the evolution of this game, as the warts are removed as they appear

One thing that gave me bit of hope for humanity was a battle that occured this weekend before the caltrops fix:
AD was sieging Arrius, small group of 20 or so. One of them threw down caltrops on their siege, I think to myself "Oh balls, here we go again"... but the AD packed up their siege, moved over to where there were no caltrops, then resumed. The same person throws them down again, AD packs up again and moves over. The person didn't try the exploit third time.
While most players abused the hell out of caltrops until the last second, it was good to see that not everyone used it
