DK vs nightblade tank

So i am a new player, i recently did some research on the difference in eso tanking as compared to previous mmos, apparently its impossible to hold all trash mobs while tanking in this game, and a good tank is to prioritize the 'big' threats or the biggest threats and tank them, while either attempting to CC the rest or flat out ignoring them.



My question is i am trying to decide between a DK or NB tank, which one has more CC abilities??



I like the IDEA of a NB tank, draining, self healing while tanking(Though from a practical standpoint it might not be viable since everyone seems to love DK tanks, and they(Dks) are everywhere)

Also how effective are those self heals that nightblades are known for as far as tanking is concerned?

Just wanted to say a Nightblade with Siphoning Attacks is a Shielded Assault'ing MACHINE!

The only problem is you might cause your healer to have a seizure with all the bouncing around.

DK Tank = Superb AOE tanking and best (personal) mitigation Ultimate in the game

NB Tank = Slightly better ST tank and best (group) mitigation Ultimate in the game.

All 4 classes are fine tanks, that's not really an issue in ESO atm and once they fix a lot of the broken class mechanics for NB (soon) it'll be that much better, but DK is still probably the overall better tank, especially since many fights are AOE and they just shine at AOE tanking.

If you want a tank in PvP at some point DK is by far the best. Reflective scales will reflect all spells back to target including Ultimate spells like Meteor and the morph will increase that damage. Nightblade has nothing even close to mitigate damage from spells like this in their skill line let alone reflect them back to the caster.

Dark Talons is a smart AoE CC that does not need to be aimed and damages with 6m radius. A Nightblade Tank has no CC ability even close to match Talons as a tank. Also Talons is not countered by the CC immunity skill Immovable.

Green Dragon Blood is the second best self heal in the game (Sorc Critical Surge is #1 self heal). Nightblade tank only has two heal over times (swallow soul) and refreshing path. Leeching Strikes is broken only returning half the health its supposed to and it severely gimps your damage output so I wouldn't consider that as viable.

As a Dragon Knight you can spam Standard of Might for probably the best AoE damaging abilities in the game. A Nightblade tank's AoE is almost non existent. Refreshing path is getting only a minor upgrade in damage but its also getting a nerf at the same time making the path visible to all enemies so I wouldn't count on that at all. Talons does instant damage and is a smart 6m AoE CC that cannot be countered by the immunity skill Immovable so you're pretty much superior in every way as a Dragon Knight tank than a Nightblade tank could ever hope to be.


Basically in PvP and PvE a Dragon Knight Tank will give you the best survivability, utility, damage mitigation, second best single target and AoE dps (Sorc #1 here), second best self healing (again Sorc is #1 with Critical Surge). There is nothing a Nightblade actually does better than a Dragon Knight in a meaningful way as far as tanking while the Dragon Knight is also being better at, spellcasting, single target dps, AoE CC, AoE Dps, group utility, etc. The superior choice is the Dragon Knight in every respect and you will excel at all roles only coming in 2nd place to the Sorcerer as far as single target dps and self healing in case you decide to change your play style later.

Disagree. The post seems to be overall bitter and biased.

Veil of Blades+Path+Sap Essence might not be as good as DK AoE, but it does its job (got no trouble doing public VR dungeons solo). And you can always use lolrune for AoE CC.

Siphoning Attacks is *AMAZING* for tanking, despite the damage reduction. Great Stamina\Mana battery.

And there are quite a few things an NB tank can do better than a DK tank. Most prominently, the Inner Fire+Cloak trick, which is borderline exploit, according to some players.

NB tank may not be as beefy as a DK tank upfront, but smart play is both, rewarding and efficient.

I have tried both as a tank (NB & DK) and NB 2H Siphoning Tank is by far the most fun for me.

lolrune and Inner Fire + Cloak being borderline exploit? Look at who is being sarcastic and bitter here, real hypocrisy there mate. I assume you mean Volcanic Rune which is not class specific CC and far inferior to Dragon Knight's Dark Talons CC. Since the OP is specifically interested in CC he could slot both Volcanic Rune for ranged AoE CC and Dark Talons.

Inner Fire + Cloak is very situational as it does not work against the toughest mobs/bosses who see right through your cloak or use AoE and has zero usefulness in PvP so its unjustified you call it borderline exploit.

Also keep in mind that if you're going to PUG trials end game Nightblades are not even invited because of how gimped they are compared to Dragon Knights. Your only option is to join a guild that will include you in trials.

hm ok, so between a sorc tank and a dk tank, you would give aoe dps and self healing to the sorc. What about CC/Aoe CC? Out of sorc vs dk which would be better in that regard?

hm ok, so between a sorc tank and a dk tank, you would give aoe dps and self healing to the sorc. What about CC/Aoe CC? Out of sorc vs dk which would be better in that regard?

In regards to CC/AoE CC the DK is unmatched. Not even the most gifted theorycrafter could possibly argue that DK does not have the most awesome CC among all classes. Be careful of these threads and the semantics people throw around. Go by the facts and do your own research but I can tell you that Dragon Knight CC capabilities cannot be matched by any other class under the best circumstances.

As NB tank i had a lot of fun in veteran dungeons running a leeching/self healing tank build. Unfortunately the current trials "endgame" either needs u to block most of the time or crank out good dps, while u "tank" a little.

Basically any class can tank trials, since all u need is the ranged taunt and maybe the proj. reflect S&S skill.

Atm "tanking" in trials was so boring, that i felt rather useless and switched to heal/dps until i see a reason to play tank again.
