1. They patch the servers - you cry
2. They don't take the servers down for weekly maintenance - you cry
3. They take the servers down for too long - you cry
4. They don't take the servers down for long enough - you cry
5. They give an ETA - you cry
6. They don't give an ETA - you cry
7. They take the servers down at a time you don't agree with - you cry
8. They take the servers down to affect the least amount of people - you cry
As I have said in other posts, the human society as a whole is doomed.

I don't care that much about the time when the servers are back up but we should have been allowed to start downloading at at the start of the downtime.

1. Take the servers down during a time where most people are sleeping.
Not in the middle of the day. When most people are working. Except for people who can play while at work, or people who have days off in the middle of the week, or people who skipped school etc etc etc..... but most people sleep between 2am-8am So WHY

WHY start maintenance @8am????? start that S*** at like 2-3am when most people are sleeping or going to go to sleep in the next hour. YES inconvenience the Late nighters. They are the abnormal here. Not the people who are AWAKE and Playing @ work, Have a day off, or Skipped school on a thursday

What bugs me just a little is when I'm told I will need to download a 5+ Gig patch but I can't do that while the servers are down, so if they are still down when I leave for work then I won't be able to start the 4-5 hour download till I get home with 4-5 hours before bed.
*sigh* I could wish they would release the patch for download while the game servers are down.
Ok so it is a big patch .. but what could they honeslty be doing? It was already running on the PTS, it isn't like they are currently writing the code for the patch. 8+ hours minimum is a very long time to load up a patch that has been tested on the PTS already.

With all due respect (I'm trying to be nice), unless you are a network engineer, you have two clues of what you speak of.
1. None
2. Zero
In my previous life I was a Network admin for a online entertainment company and when the software was patched, server downtime could vary depending on the size and difficulty of the patch. To say "it's not like they are writing code" is an ignorant statement in itself. Server architecture is a very difficult process to get right and with an online game with this many systems / players.....it is a nightmare at best.

Well being a Network Admin now and currently getting a paycheck for it ... It is all virtual servers, everything can be tested and preloaded beforehand. It should not take 8 hours of downtime unless something went seriously wrong. Since you were a network admin you should know in 99% of businesses taking the entire system down for extended amounts of time would get you fired. With virtual infrastructure it should take very little time to move over unless things were not tested correctly, planned correctly or something just went wrong in the process. Maybe you were a network admin when servers had the OS, Hard Drives and databases all in one machine but in the current world of SAN's NAS and virtual servers the process of doing updates is very different.
My guess is these extra things they added in that were not on the PTS are causing unforseen issues ie: byproduct of not properly testing.
