I have 8. I wanted to save some names and level through each zone from scratch (rather than experience other factions via the VR route) as well as try a few class combinations. Like most I use some for storage, crafting and so on. As I'm in no rush I'm enjoying taking my time levelling each up to 15 then I plan to move them up again in 5 level increments doing a fair bit of exploring.
I have 3 main characters, one for each alliance. I have 3 crafter characters who cover all the equipment needs for the those and serve as materials mules. Finally, I have 2 characters that are 'friends companion' character who have to remain synced with my friends that I play with when we co-roll together.
I would actually love it if they allowed a couple more character slots. Would love to at least have "friend co-rolling" characters on all 3 alliances.
I have one of each native class in the AD. I play the two elves and the Khajit is for crafting and storage. I'm really just waiting for the console to ship so I will stick to these for now. I'm still undecided about starting afresh on the console or transferring. Time will tell
I had ~intended~ to have eight distinct characters. At present, however, I am mainly playing three ---- one of each faction, each a different race and different class. I have three more (my only two sorcerers and another nightblade) that are the "second wave" of characters for the three factions... and two characters that have basically been relegated to bank mules, although that was not the original intent.
The bank mules simply cannot adventure since one holds all my rare crafting resources (green/blue upgrade ingredients and Trait stones and Motif books, etc) and one holds all my Yet-To-Be-Researched items. They're both nearly always full inventory.
My three "second wave" characters are not advancing very far or fast yet, since I have already SEEN the content they're facing. The intent was for them to choose ~different~ options in those cases where we have a choice (red text)... but those differences don't do much to hide the fact that MOST of what they are doing is stuff I've already done.
Unfortunately this likely means if I ever get to the Veteran levels, I won't want to continue and see the other factions' content AGAIN.
So, aside from a little dabbling with the second wave of three, I'm pretty much just playing three characters ---- I MIGHT move one of my Sorcerer up to be played more regularly, except with three factions, I'd be repeating content with that one.
I have 4 but only actively play 1 character, I am not pushing quickly through the game but I am not taking my time either. I have hit V4 and almost to V5. I am anxious to do the new content, but if you are pushing to V10 and nobody else is then you end up waiting around. Also you may end up in a situation where you have to play with other players of whom you do not have a familiarity of their play style.
1) Templar, level 18, dual wield, resto staff, DC, Nord female
2) Dragon Knight, level 22, sword and board, DC, Imperial female
3) Nightblade, level 22, bow, AD, Bosmer female
4) Nightblade, dual wield, level 3, AD Bosmer male
5) Dragon Knight, fire staff, level 3, EP, Dunmer male
6) Templar, fire staff, level 9, DC, Imperial female
7) Sorc, bow, level 12, DC, Breton male
8) Dragon Knight, fire staff, DC, Bosmer female (who is so cool her name was "borrowed' even if the player spelled it wrong and put hyphens in, didn't get a chance to look at the character but I'm sure it's a total copy).
I play them all, each has a purpose, of all the ones I'm leveling, only my Imperial Dragon Knight will be leveled through the vet levels unless we decide to do it all again. She's the tank for my guild.
5 that I play. 1 that I might play later on. 2 are just for storage. All of them have all the hirelings (which is getting nerfed in the patch tomorrow but will still be useful). I bought 43k horses on all 8 of them (5 light horses and 3 draft horses).
Define "nerfed" please.
Well before today's patch you can open the hireling chest on any character and the contents are based on the character that opened it. So you could just get 1/3 hireling skill on your alts. If you were to open a blacksmith chest on that character you would get iron ore and a slim chance of tempering alloy. If you have your other character with 9/9 blacksmithing and 3/3 hireling open it you get top tier ore and a good chance at tempering alloy. After this patch you can't do that. It doesn't send you a chest, it sends you the contents based on the character that has the skill.
4 Normal Characters (one of each class, 2 Dunmer, a Khajiit and an Argonian)
4 of the ugliest ass wood elves I could make, named stuff like 'Armoury Slave' and 'Potion Slave'... they still ware the chains and rag pants from cold harbour.
They are dirty Bosmer, THEY MUST KNOW WHAT THEY DID!!!
6 I play, 1 a placeholder till I can figure out what class to make him, and 1 storage mule that holds all my good stuff in case the bank ever craps out again.
So far 1 of them is V1, the rest are 6-17, and I have I only play when I record.
I'm something of an altoholic, always wanting to experiment with new character concepts... and not just meaning different combinations of class, skill, weapon, etc... I could run a dozen Orc DKs and each would feel different to me.
I only have my 8 slots available, but I've deleted characters that I regret giving up in order to feed my pathos and build new ones. I really wish they'd sell extra character slots in the store. I'd throw money at that pretty fast. Unfortunately, just getting a second account doesn't work for me, I don't want to have to remember multiple usernames/passwords or not be able to make use of the account banks and such. Also, while a one-time fee for a new slot would be fine, an extra $15 a month, maybe eventually an extra $30 or $45 a month would get too expensive, too fast.
