I think it may have started with the infamous Lighting patch that has basically halved the fps for everyone who played the game.
So yeah, unfortunately it just might be how ESO/ZOS work and a lot of people are afraid of them changing anything with how they usually do it.
It's true that implementing or removing things will cause lag.
Want Barber Shop? lag.
Remove Animation Cancelling? lag.
Remove lag? lag.

care to explain? how does barber shop creates lag? do you expect 100000+ ppl changing beards at one time 24/7?
also animation cancelling if done properly (forcing animations to play till end before allowing to cast another spell) would actually reduce lag.

I'd pay to see that. A beard changing event. I'd love it!

Lol, you didn't know that Deers in Cyro caused lags and were removed?!! Nightblades is everywhere in Cyro nowdays, and since Wheeler in same eso live confirmed that Nightblade=Deer -->> Nightblades causing lags and must be removed.

change is good if only done right.
Halo changed for the worse with H4 &H5. I feel ESO is headed down the same path.
class imbalance makes people mad!

I wish people wouldn't express such generalisations as if they were fact. That patch may have affected performance for some, but by no means did it do so "for everyone who played the game". It didn't even remotely affect the game's performance on either of my machines, for a start!

Grats then, you're in the very lucky minority I'm genuinely glad for
All of my friends/guildies and plenty of randoms I've talked to about it have noticed a considerate drop in performance that patch. I've also heard complaints from some of big PvE/PvP guilds that the performance in big group settings(aoe and stuff, especially actual in PvP, though 12 people in Trials are also not such a small deal) plummeted down back then pretty much. Which of course doesn't imply you're lying - but it does imply you're quite lucky where most of us haven't been.
Forgive my grumbling though - I'm simply getting more and more frustrated with the state of this game lately. And I would love to still unquestionably love it but well...

Prologned use of Twitter can be harmful.
To answer your question - reason is that ppl have no confidence in ZOS's ability to fix things, that's why they are so scared of anything possibly going wrong. It's harsh, but that's how it is.
