What the hell happened with ESO?

I play ESO for months and never had troubles with the game, but since the latest updates it is very unpleasant to play. I'm having serious problems with fps. And how I know this is ESO problem? Because is the only game that has presented strange fps problems in my PC. But it's not just me, the forum is full of reports of problems!

So ZOS, please let ESO as good as before. I really want to play, I began my third character recently, 2 are already Veterans!

More specific information is always good to give. CPU model, GPU model, etc. In general however, I can suggest that if you have updated anything recently that rolling back a driver update for that component may work for you.

Furthermore, I think it is a good idea for any PC gamer to keep an eye on their CPU and GPU temps while gaming, as a high temperature could cause the scaling back of performance.
Usually found in Tech Support somewhere.

    Is not my problem, really!

    My config:
    Intel Haswell Core i5 4670 3.40GHz
    Gigabyte GA-H87M-D3H
    EVGA GeForce GTX 770 2GB GDDR5 ACX (Driver 358.52)
    Corsair Value Series 8GB (2x4) DDR3 @ 1600MHz
    PSU Thermaltake Smart Series 650W
Windows 7 SP1 x64 - All drivers up to date

    - All temps OK (CPU ~ 57 Cº and GPU ~ 71 Cº)

I tried so many video drivers, reinstalled OS, but nothing solved. And is only in ESO. ALL other games, like SOMA, Witcher 3, GTA V, Crysis 3 works fine!

How one game can work well since February and suddenly have problems? Since lastest updates ESO is not the same game!

Addons most likely. After 1.7/2.1, I completely uninstalled all of my addons and only selectively added back the ones I need.

You could also try a full reinstall, this has helped others because of memory fragmenting supposedly.

I do think the most recent update has brought about some frequent memory leaks but reloadui fixes most.

I have had these issues since the game put in the thief system. I have replace my 650 ti with a 980 and no go. The game struggles with fps while in towns, and would zero out to 0 fps randomly in cities or out in the world which leads to crashes. It's far far far worse on windows 10 so don't go to that OS.

I found one trick that clears the issue up nearly ... 90% of the time and that's to turn off bump mapping. It will make the world look a little flat till you get use to it. You may think that you're playing a 2006 Oblivon or Lotro. the trick works for me at least but isn't ideal. I would not put up with having to play the game stripped down. My computer isn't a beast, but the 980 owns all my other games max to a T.

There's simply too many other folks on the forums with these same issues to be ignore, and honestly ZOS has said zero about this which leads me to feel that we're being ignore. Chances are that everyone simply blames our computers. I have spent days and days trouble shooting this game with nothing else working but turning off bump maps. I'm going to put this part in bold because folks brings it up a lot and honestly it is not the issue ... ---> I have these issues with NO, that is to say, ZERO, ADDONs installed

To turn off bump mapping: SET NORMAL_MAPS "1" to SET NORMAL_MAPS "0"

I'd love for anyone else having these issues to give this a try and let us know if it works.

What does turning off bump maps do exactly?

I also experience fps drops and my rig is pretty decent, 4.0GHz CPU, GTX 970 4GB, 16GB RAM, 250GB SSD etc.

Hopefully we get improvements with the next update but I wouldnt bet anything on it..

Bump Maps simulates bumps and wrinkles on the surface of textures to give them a better and more realistic look. One example is making the texture surface look 3d as if it was using high poly count when really its not, you can call that a deception. This wikipedia link will help you understand it, and with pictures. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bump_mapping
