Black screen during ESO--> crash fix

Hi all,

Recently I had been experiencing countless game crashes where everything seems to work except my screen goes black. Ie: sounds/music and the game is running but its just the display dosent work. I cursed and swore at zenimax for a bit for outputting a nub patch but after some extensive error analysis and looking up of error reports on windows (im running windows 10 with Nvidia GEforce Gt780) I found out what the underlying problem was. If ur driver for Nvidia is later than version 300, there is a conflicting windows update that crashes when u run ESO or other similar graphics intensive games. Me and my friends have been experiencing this and I have managed to fix this problem and my game has been working fine for the past 3 days. (my friends too)

So here's how I did it;

There is a conflicting windows update with Nvidia drivers past version 300, so you are going to have to manually uninstall this windows update.
1) control panel>programs>installed updates
2) look for kernel-mode driver framework version 1.11
3) right click uninstall
4) Go to Nvidia control panel and set to maximum performance ( Do not use balanced or max quality)
5) profit

I hope this helps any others who have been getting black crash screens every 5 minutes!

thanks for sharing mate, I had the same issues a few weeks back but it (thankfully) resolved itself I assume since it no longer does this
screen capping for future use

Glad I could help. I would still advise you to go through with this because before i did it, my GPU was hitting 98 degrees while running ESO. Now its safe in the normal range.

@ZOS_MollyH no problem! I only hope this gets out to players who have been having this issue. At one point it was crashing so often I just hit alt f4 and went on with my day cos I was so pissed.

Also the error message you would normally see is NVidia graphics card stopped responding and has recovered. If your seeing this error or something along these lines you should uninstall the windows update mentioned above.

I have a similar problem but it doesn't crash the client it makes the screen black but I can see the user interface and attack monsters and I see my ftc information scrolling but the screen is black. I set the graphics to low and I was able to see some models and stuff but no background and no monsters or anything.

This all happened after I upgraded to windows 10. at first I would crash before even getting to character screen so I updated my NVidia graphics driver and I could get into the game but with the black screen as mentioned above.

I tried to do what the OP mentioned to fix but I cannot find the kernel thing in the list for installed updates.

please if anyone know an answer or has hgad similar problems pls let me know

Ah the u cannot simply do a control f (find) in the installed updates and type kernel mode driver. It won't work aka u won't be able to find it. Each windows update has a unique number reference ant that is what u should type into the find bar. Try googling windows kernel update v1.1 and look for its unique reference id. Hope this helps! Also if that doesn't work then u need to solve the other end of the problem and that would be done by uninstalling all ur NVidia drivers and doing a clean sweep of the registry and then manually installing a NVidia driver that is Pre 330 version.

Also do try googling "NVidia driver stopped responding and has recovered". There are countless posts online about how windows 10 is screwing up when used in conjunction with NVidia. Worst case scenarios is that we have to wait a few months before either Microsoft or NVidia work their problems out

Also get a software like speed fan etc and check your cpu/gpu core temperatures. If thyre running at more than 70++ u might need to reapply thermal paste or turn down ur game settings. I'm assuming your on a laptop.

I am getting this also. I can hear sounds and my keys work but the screen is blank. I have to close the screen and go back in.
I am still using Windows 7 though.

Mine did the same thing, had to uninstall the kernel-mode driver framework version 1.11 as per instructions above, but also had to roll back my graphics card driver to v353.62, which seems to be the last one that didn't crash ESO

Ah yes I forgot to mention that. Yup you have to roll back the driver to v354 and below
