Please don't automatically reset my skill points with the IC patch.

I read in another thread that when the IC patch goes live, our skill points will be reset upon login. Is this how it is usually done?

If that is the case, then the free respec will be a waste for me, because I have no idea if my build ( which I spent a lot of time leveling the skills for) will still be viable or not. I am not interested in researching the math for everything and am not sure what I am going to do when patch day comes, or what new skills I will need to make the game enjoyable again.

I would like to choose when or if I respec.

If I am mistaken about how the respec is done, then please disregard this post.

Thank you

It's simple. Make a note of which skills you currently have unlocked and are using, then simply select those same skills again. You won't lose any progress made on skills you were using. If you were using a particular one-hand skill and it was at rank 2 with 50% XP towards rank 3, that's exactly where it will be after the respec.

I appreciate the reply, but it would mean that the free respec would only be used for me to continue playing my old build until I am able to figure out what is working and not working for me anymore. I rather save my respec for when I am sure.

It's not a 'free respec' so much as a 'mandatory respec'. Because of changes to some of the skill details, everyone in the game has to have their slates cleaned. No exceptions.

You keep the skills you're pretty sure you like and need, and drop the dead weight (things you never use) to free up a few new skill points to experiment with.

If you're not interested in doing any research on your build, it's always going to be trial and error, anyway. You're not really gaining or losing anything in this exchange, except for the few minutes it takes to reset things.

Most characters will go through a few resets (both enforced and voluntary) over the course of their lives- my best advice would be not to sweat it (and maybe learn to like research).

Ok, so a mandatory respec and not a free respec.

As far as the research is concerned, my class is having a lot of changes happening to it and then there is the whole stamina regen thing for blocks and dodge rolling that I have no idea how my build will be affected play wise.

I have looked at a couple builds from a well known player that has been playing on the pts, and well... not liking the options he has come up with to adapt to the changes to the class.

I just hope my old build still allows me to enjoy the game until I can figure out what is the dead weight on my skill bars. Because I use everything and don't have any wasted slots.

I agree with not wanting a forced reset. I would much prefer a one-time free respec at the shrines, or a free respec scroll for each character. I have a thread about that here: http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en-GB/discussion/204247/skill-reset-with-2-1#latest

Thats a lot of work for them to do for a very few people who can't be bothered to press "E" a few times to get them back (or whatever it is on the consoles)

You don't loose your experience in the skills themselves.

I understand the fear of confusion on patch day, but just make use of a pen and paper and write down what skills you are using now so you can relearn them in less than a minute on the day.

Nb - Yeah its not a huge amount of work for Zos to give you what you want, but there are far more important things they could focus the resources at.

This template would be useless after the patch. Some skills change and some disappear to be replaced by an entirely new skill. Other skills mover about the tree.

This idea would be useful for normal BAU play, but would make the issue you are facing worse

takes forever and makes me not want to respec

I feel your pain, the 5 minutes (max) is something to be afeared of

Actually, sending a mail to every character with a respec scroll inside is less or at most the same amount of work compared to force resetting the skill points. All mechanics are already in game.

I appreciate and agree to that proposal over a forced reset.

What I wish they would implement is some kind of selective respec. Some of us have well over 200 skill points on our VR14 characters so it's a major pain in the arse to go through each and every class line, guild, craft, etc. and try to remember every skill and morph we chose previously. What would be much nicer is that it gives you a free respec, but the previous settings are maintained and NOT changed. If there is one skill you decide you need changed, then you click on it, make the change to the new skill or morph, and then continue onto the next. Once you have finished all your changes, you commit those changes and the ones you wanted changed are done along with those you didn't want changed. This is pretty much how the Champion point respecs are done so there is no reason why ZOS cannot implement something similar for the skill respecs.

Another nice option would be to handle skill points similar to champion points. You reset, you can distribute them, once redistributed you confirm and then the money gets deducted. If you choose to, you can cancel the changes and it reverts back to the initial distribution.

That would at least alleviate the "oh faugh, I misplaced one point out of my 283, now I need to redo all (and pay twice)".

This I wouldn't mind. Of course someone will chime-in and say something to the extent of, "You should pay more attention to...."

Then when they do it themselves they *** and moan in their head about it while running back to the re-spec shrine.

    :D

No. It is my first on console. It is frustrating that I can't try out the changes before they go live. Reading patch notes and watching others with different play styles test it out is not the same as me getting the opportunity to try it out myself. Plus keep in mind that when this does goes live for console, the game will have only been out for 3 months.

Of all the MMOs that I have played, this is the first time I've ever seen a mass forced skill reset.

Unless a lot of skills are simply disappearing, there's no reason a free skill reset sent to each character upon log in with a mail message explaining the situation would not be satisfactory.

Just a notification when they first log in after the patch that their skills & attributes have been reset. That's how I remember it going with previous ones, anyway (like when 1.6 came out).

Side note: it sure is easy to tell who in this thread only has one or two characters and is incapable of understanding that other people might have enough characters to make recording all of your skill points and then reselecting them an onerous process. Luckily, I have recently been tipped off to the existence of an add-on that lets you export a file that tells you where all of your skill points are (I can't remember the name of it, and I'm at work right now so I can't check). You'd better believe I'll be using that to make the forced reset easier on me. Doesn't help those on console, though, and it doesn't address the bigger concern that it would be much better to be able to reset after playing with your existing build for a bit to see what is and isn't still working for you, rather than this forced reset.

To be honest, as irritating as it is, this is only a new process to those who have started playing the game since 1.6 dropped. I expect there will be some rage threads from console players, but not a whole heck of a lot from PC players (even if, like me, they don't like the way it gets handled) because for the most part we've been there done that.

Yeah. I was thinking from the perspective of a console player. Specifically, a "casual" console player that will not have kept informed about all the things happening on the PTS as these changes get tweaked before going live.
