I solved my permanent crashing !!!

Like many here, patch 1.6 brought a permanent crash (black screen, have to do ctrl-alt-del, then crash reporter...) to my game.
My game crashed on average every 2 minutes (yes, two minutes !). And pressing 'E' (my button to interact with npc's, wayshrines,...) had a 50% chance to cause a CTD.
My PC is an intel i7, windows 7 (but it's the 32bit version, not 64 !) and an nvidia GTX 760 graphics card from asus.
I tried all the usual stuff in such case : fiddling with the game settings, updating drivers,... nothing helped.
But, now I found a way that worked for me, hopefully for others too.
In short :
- Use opengl instead of directX. You need to modify your UserSettings.txt for that
- Do not start the game with the launcher. Make a shortcut to the game client (eso.exe) and use that.
- Run it as an administrator
- I also had to disable visual themes, but that might not be necessary for you
Be aware that you can have a very strange login-screen, and the loadscreens (and their text) are... a mesh of pixels.. And the game does not look as beautiful in opengl as it does in directX.
BUT IT WORKS !! I had no crashes for several hours !!
If I put directX back in the UserSettings.txt, the game crashes almost immediately !
Longer instructions for the not so techy:
1) opengl
goto your 'My Documents\Elder Scrolls Online\liveeu' (might be livena if you are on the NA-server)
Make a backup of the UserSettings.txt you find there (in case you break something)
Open the UserSettings.txt with notepad or notepad++
Locate the following line
SET GraphicsDriver.7 "D3D11"
and change it to :
SET GraphicsDriver.7 "OPENGL"
Save the file and exit notepad
2) shortcut
goto the location where you installed the game
locate the client, it will be in this subdir : The Elder Scrolls Online EU\game\client (replace EU with NA if you are on the NA server)
The client is the 'eso.exe', create a shortcut for it (on your desktop or a games folder...)
3) admin
Right-click the shortcut and choose properties
Select the tab 'compatibility'
place a checkmark on 'Run this program as an administrator'
Note : I had to also check 'Disable visual themes'. But this may not be necessary for everyone.
I hope it works for you too.
To ZOS:
I made a ticket with my systemreport yesterday (t: 150305-001815). You can add this 'workaround' to that ticket, or I'll make a new one.
Can this info be given to the tech department ?
EDIT : I got a reply from ZOS. They say I can also switch to DirectX 9 by using DXD9 instead of OPENGL. But when I tried it, the crash reporter came up as soon as the loadscreen after character select went away.... so I reverted back to opengl.
Let's hope the coming patch (tonight) will help, but I didn't read anything in the patch notes about this issue..

I tried this hoping it would fix my ERROR 11 message that comes when I try to launch game. It was unsuccessful for me and my problem, but thank you for sharing. I keep searching the forums for people who may have some tech savvy that may help me quicker than ESO technical. I believe this to be on the right track. If I could disable the cinematic somehow I think I could get into game. Any thoughts how I could do this.?
1. I press PLAY and it goes to play cinematic and gets no further - I get a crash report. Like you I have done everything suggested by ESO technical.
I put in a ticket and it was misread and so nothing was done. So I resubmitted and I am still waiting. I presume they are inundated with a plethora of tickets at the moment.
I am getting extremely frustrated/angry as I have not been able to access the game at all since UPDATE 6. I could ring but I am in Australia. Besides email works better for me - hate phones

✭✭Thought this showed some promise. Mine was set to "D3D9". I changed it to "D3D11" and actually was able to log in for about 10 mins before the crash!

I myself don't want to call this a solution. It is a temporary workaround at best.
ZOS needs to fix this in the game-code.0 -

Same here @xMovingTarget. "OpenGl" makes my eyes hurt when playing. I believe the framerate is dropped or something. I have not done any quests, or helped my guild mates since 1.6 came out due to this. All I do is check my mail for hirelings, and play around with the justice system. Pretty much all I can do unless I want to deal with crashes all day.
Support still has not contacted me since my latest ticket (been two days)...0 -

I just found the repair option in game options (I was looking for it in the top RH Coggy thingy *sighs*) and it wants me to re-download the entire update. I should try this option first I guess before messing around with settings. Thanks.
It took 24+ hours the first time and 5 phonecalls to my IP for extra gigs, I am limited to only 25gbs per month here because I have the worst Internet in Australia (TY Telstra
) ... waiting on NBN (National Broadband Network) to save me. Until then I have to beg.

FluutKeksSoul ShrivenHi. This workaround works for me, thank you so much! Have the same issues, permanent crashes of game client. i stopped counting when reached 100+ crashes since 1.6 came to live sersvers. And 1.6.6 doesn't fix it! Switched to OpenGL and no more crashes. Don't need to run as Admin nor to disable Visual Themes. But had to reduce graphic quality settings to get playable (not acceptable) DPS , since OpenGL performance seems to be lot worse compared to D3D. Now it's ugly but at least i can play.
Hopefully ZOS can fix it soon, but again THANKS A LOT to OP for this article.0
