10/10 Fragments of a Post

Fragment 1

Dear ZOS,
Thank you so much for Imperial City. It is far more amazing than I expected it would be.

Fragment 2

The Soundtrack alone is worthy of the price. I loved the new songs, the battle songs are INCREDIBLE. Please, please, keep giving us new music with each DLC! Also, all the battles, the atmosphere... All the nostalgia... Breathtaking!

Fragment 3

There is, however, one thing that bothers me. Something that started with the Dwemer motif, if I'm not mistaken... and that by now you might be realizing it's a bit... ANNOYING.

Fragment 4

Something that is now kind of appearing everywhere. On new motifs, on the items you need to craft the items with the motifs, on provisioning recipes...

Fragment 5

I'm talking about splitting all the loot into 'fragments' that we can merge later on.

Fragment 6

Take glass, for example. You have split the motif into pages and the pages into fragments and even when you get all that you've gone and split the style resource into shards.

Fragment 7

Yeah, I know there's a reason behind that. From the gameplay perspective, it gives a longer life (and challenge) to content. From the market perspective, it gives a great reason to eventually sell motifs and stuff like that on the Crown Store...

Fragment 8

And though I think it's nice - for some cases (exotic stuff, stuff that makes sense to be "fragmented") I also think you guys should be careful... Because if EVERYTHING starts to come up like this, all the new content starts to come up like this... Think of the long run, think of characters starting the game a few years from now, think of how... stupid, lame and slow progression will start to become?

Fragment 9

A few months away from the game and you have A FARM FEST to go after. Or if you are like me, who wanted to "roleplay" my crafters (so each one of my characters has a different craft) I'm screwed because I need all motifs 3 times... And, well... if everything starts to come up fragmented...

Fragment 10

ESO will soon become the first MMO west of Greenwich famous for its grinding. And we don't want that, do we? :)

Complete Post:

Please, ZOS. Think about that. Break up some stuff - but try and give us some "whole" stuff too every now and then. Whole motifs and such. Or you'll seriously have a problem on the long run...

Good post, I am right now very frustrated about the motif page fragments (not even motif fragments, or motif pages, but motif page fragments).

I am glad I came into IC with you for a bit because it was a blast, and took my mind off how mind-numbing the grind for crafting had become.

Zeni, please listen to our concerns about fragments of fragments... it's just busywork for the sake of it, and it is actually quite demoralising.

10/10 post. I will grind it out (gotta have them all, ya know?) But fragments of fragments is a bit fragmenting to my crafter's soul.

(And make THE rarest drop in the entire game a full motif book does not count. I'm looking at you Dwemer)

Based on what I have learned today about the Glass Motif, it will take me 28 character-months to get enough fragments to make 14 motifs. Of course, not counting duplicates.

This was so obviously designed to drive everyone to the Crown Store. They could charge US$100 for the full Glass Motif and it would be cheap compared to the character-years it will take to make a complete set in the game.

Right now, things are excused... Because, in a way, we're talking about lost knowledge (Dwemer) or quite exotic stuff (Glass)... But imagine in the future if they decide to add more simple (yet new) motifs like "Bandit Motif" (for example) or regional stuff, I don't know... "Wrothgar Style" etc... and fragment it?

I mean, why by the eight divines would knowledge as simple as a common bandit jacket be so difficult to acquire?

So, ok, splitting stuff is acceptable sometimes... But let's slow down and think: aren't we splitting too much? Shouldn't we go for more traditional, complete stuff sometimes? :P

Its simply so they can sell it in store for 5000 Crowns.

You can put nice lore behind it - it was lost in time and fragmented by Daedra magic.

But at the end of the day - they want it sold in Crown store.
And best way to do that is to make aquiring one so tedious and boring that you would rather pay then grind like a mad man for unknown ammount of time ( RNG )

    End of story.

And yes, this is no monthly fee price.
You still pay to play. Just in another form.

I am not loving this aspect of IC at all. Already I have seen someone who is selling ONE chapter for 300k..... way to go with stabilizing the economy ZOS. I am not a pvper so the fact that any of the stuff I need as a pve crafter is in a place where I will be repeatedly (and annoyingly) Ganked by my fellow players is unappealing to say the VERY least. Now I have to keep going back over and over wasting (in my opinion) the precious game time I can squeeze out of my RL? In my humble opinion not your best move ZOS. Not to mention I feel as though you are taking this fragment thing waaaay to far. At some point it is going to become a deterrent to those of us that play for relaxation. If the other people on this page are correct and you just want us to buy it from the crown store please make it available sooner rather than later so I can get back to actually enjoying my game time.

Fragments are not too bad. I have 3 guildies with 3 separate pages and I'm closing in in getting a page as well (7 fragments - 4 i'm debating to just sell). Yes, it will take longer than before to get them, but considering the pace and how many people will be selling their fragments now, people will be able to get to craft glass motif.

    I'm indifferent to this, really.

    I do.

It is not so much the grinding, but the pointlessness of it.

If it just was about putting in the hours, even if it took you time to do it, you would have an accomplishment at the end.

ESO is not about accomplishment, it is about convenience. You can get a 60/60/60 horse for 250 gold per day for a good long time. Your accomplishment isn't in terms of gold spent over time, it is in terms of real money saved. For around $130, you could have done it in a day.

The Glass Motif will be the same way. You can spend every day slaving away doing writs hoping to get a fragment, then glue them together hoping to get the Motif you need, or you can buy them from someone else. Getting a full set will be a massive achievement in the game. However, by the time most people get there, it will be for sale in the Crown Store for about $40, which ultimately places a cash value on all of that work.

It is like running a marathon with a respectable time only to discover that many people took the officially sanctioned short cut and finished in 5 minutes. Yeah, you get the satisfaction of doing the whole thing, but in the end, you wasted your time.

The whole motif should be available to find in game, it's just very rare.

They did this with Dwemer. It was possible to get the whole book, just extremely unlikely.

It is possible to get a whole book when combining fragments (instead of just a chapter). Just very rare.

    Entertainment typically is pointless.

Most people in a marathon don't care. They aren't competing for a fast time. They are challenging themselves.

If I have a goal of finding all pieces (or trading duplicates for pieces I need) and I do it, how is that wasted time? Why would I care about how others get the items, especially "pointless" vanity items? That has no bearing on me.

I get a lot more satisfaction running a marathon than I do out of driving on that same road to work everyday.

The reason it is broken out in chunks is so that there is a sense of progress while someone goes after it. It also creates an economy for the items. If they wanted the average person to spend a month farming for something, you could either have one item with a ridiculously low drop chance that a player may not see and give up on, or you can have multiple items with reasonable drop chances that provide motivation to a player to keep going when they see one. Even if they get a duplicate, they can still sell one off and buy a different one. This might not be a model that tickles your fancy, but there is a reason games have shifted towards variations of this model (see WoW legendaries).

Game Developers have always wanted there to be rare things in the game. Rare things have large barriers surrounding them. While it is "easy" to drop a ton of money in the Crown Store for stuff like this, most people won't do it because it's a ton of money. They’d make much more money with Glass being a reasonable price, but to keep it exclusive the price must be unreasonable.

@Kyuumu , the Glass motif (and the malachite shards) are not tied to the Imperial City DLC, they are part of the base game patch. You may be thinking of the Xyvkyn motif (which comes in pages).

Also, if they are 300k now, they will be about 40k in 2 months. Same thing that happened to the Psijic Ambrosia fragments.

I have never seen a full Dwemer book. I guess the odds of finding it are the same as the odds of getting the full glass motif by combining 10 fragments.

Generally agree with the OP. I am ok with how this works now, but if it continues down this path (books to pages, pages to fragments, fragments to ???) that would be a little much for me. You can always wait the 1-2 months for the prices to become reasonable but would rather feel like attainment is reasonable for a dedicated effort.

Exactly. And there are people not willing to buy, also. I'm usually really poor in the game (lol) because I craft a lot but I rarely sell stuff, repeated recipes and such, I usually give 'em away among friends/guildies or donate to the guild bank. So I don't have the ridiculous amount of gold people ask for motifs and such. Yet I do want to collect them :(

AlnilamE yes thank you, that is the one for IC, which in my opinion is the nicer of the two and the one I really wanted the most. Unfortunately that one is also in fragments. What's next ZOS fragmenting solvents, reagents, runes, food mats...... hell why not just fragment everything and make it impossible to achieve anything within a year. I'm sorry but this is extremely frustrating, and the current state of the game (lag wise) is just compounding the feeling. I hope there are some DEV's actually reading this so they can pass on the message. Fragmenting has run it's course with the players. Bring it down a notch.
