Distorted display after shuting down eso

I have a weird problem after i updated my client. I sometimes get weird flicker in game and when i quit eso my screen is full of pixels and weird lines like my gpu is giving out. And a reboot is the only fix. At first i thought it was a hardware problem but it only happens with eso. I can play any game or any benchmark and having alot of programs running in the background without any issues. Anyone else having the same issue? I tried the older catalyst 13.12 driver and beta 14.4 but the same result.

Came to say exactly this! Pre patch I never had any issues with the game but every since the new patch was released when I quit/exit the game my GPU goes crazy! It's almost as if exiting the game/client triggers a huge demand on the GPU and the screen breaks, artifacts everywhere, total mess.

A reboot fixes it and no other games do this for me either. I'm using a radeon HD 7870.

I get that when I log out. Especially around the place my foot went through the screen.

I thought i also had the flickering in game but it only happens at the login screen and loading screen. Then i can play the game without issues but when i quit the game and switch to my desktop i see artifacts everywhere. I hope its not doing any damage to my system.

Same. I can't even shut my computer the normal way, Have to hard shut it down.
I can't even play the game.
    I have R9 270x, i7 860 @2.80GHz and 6Gb of RAM
I have absolutely no idea what to do about this and it sucks. It only happens with ESO and never ever had this problem before the latest patch. I play the game on ultra.
I was able to play the game fine yesterday and the distorted thing would only happen after I exited the game, now it happens as soon as I start the game.

I took a video with my phone, because it's hard for me to explain what it does.

I am having this exact issue. Screen tears and flickering on the ESO loading screens. My in game performance is fine. That cell phone video linked above is exactly what I have too.

When I exit ESO my desktop is completely torn, flickering like my drivers have all crashed out. I use AMD R9 card, windows 7, i7.

Happens in fullscreen mode, and windowed.

NEVER happened before the last patch.

The only resolution after exiting ESO is to PC restart.

I have also had ESO crash after alt-tabbing.

I know its not my PC..its a gaming rig and performs any other task or game flawlessly. ESO is jacking up my hardware somehow.

edit: WOW..looking at these replies it seems everyone is using AMD/ATI..

Force weapon swap to have priority over EVERYTHING. Close enough.
Make stamina builds even with magicka builds.
    Disable abilities while holding block.
Give us a REASON to do dungeons more than once.
Remove PVP AoE CAP. It is ruining Cyrodiil.
Fix/Remove Forward Camps. They are ruining Cyrodiil.
Impenetrability needs to REDUCE CRIT DAMAGE. Not negate entire builds.

Game will be playing just fine, no artifacts or any other graphical glitches and bam, my screen turns to this. Game is still running and if I move the mouse around I'll be able to make the menu appear and quit normally. Using 13.9 ati drivers (13.12 causes problems on my machine).

I don't know, maybe my card is dying, but this only started happening after the patch.

Hear hear! I would really like to get an acknowledgement about this bug. This is not even a serious game-breaking issue any more, this is a gigantic monstrosity, I really don't appreciate an application crashing the graphics driver in such a way that forces me to reboot the entire system.

You are definitely not the only one with this problem, I posted this yesterday:

    http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/discussion/101625/post-patch-my-graphics-driver-crashes-while-playing#latest

here is another one about the possibly related invisible ghosts:

2/ crash with flicker on/after some load screens which kill the video driver. even though eso can be terminated, there are still issues with the driver. the pc needs to be rebooted for the problem to be resolved. <-- serious issue

I think I've found a work around. At least it worked for me. Launch ESO. The screen is flashing like crazy but if you can get to the settings and change from "Fullscreen" to "Windowed Fullscreen" to should fix the problem the next time you launch the game. Since the graphic drivers have already crashed you'll have to reboot your system after you make the change. Once you reboot and launch the game it will run in "Windowed Fullscreen" and the flickering will never start and you can play the game normally. It worked for me.

Unfortunately it does not for me. I was running the game in windowed-fullscreen when this happened for the first time. Despite the loss in performance I prefer this mode for the ease of multitasking and because tabbing out of the true fullscreen also tends to crash the game.

well, out of desperation, I completely uninstalled and installed again the game. Didn't expect it to fix anything and it didn't. Are they fixing this soon?

edit: nvm, didnt realize there was a hot fix. it's all good now :D *happydance*

Thanks for that video Sylwa that is exactly what happens to me when I exit the game. I saw another thread about the fullscreen vs windowed mode so I will go see if anything ever came of that and test tonight by playing in windowed mode.

I also have video issues as of the last patch but when logging in. After I click Play there is a good chance that everything on my screen gets distorted with lines and boxes in various colours. It is not possible to close the ESO client again or get back into Windows. I have to shut down the computer using the power button.

If I do make it to the login screen however, then I am fine and have no other video issues during that gaming session. Never happened prior to the 1.1.2 update.

I just wanted to chime in and say the exact same thing has been happening to me since the patch. I exited ESO yesterday afternoon to be met by a seriously distorted screen with black lines everywhere and desktop icons all over the place.

I also had to reboot the pc the hard way - well I tabbed through the ctrl-alt-del screen on W7 and eventually hit the shut down command. When you can't see the screen properly it's hard. :s

I thought it was overheating at first, but there was no sign on anything causing that and GPU temps were never higher than 60.

    I have a Radeon R9 270 X...4 Gig.

I've just been told they've done a hot fix over night so I'm going to try the game and hope I can exit fine.

The problem is not fixed yet. My loading screens were flickering. Been playing like 4 hours and after i quit the game artifacts everywhere. Please post if you still have issues.

So far so good for me..Ive logged in and had no loading screen issues yet. I have yet to close ESO to see if my PC requires a restart. Will update after this play session ends.

edit: after several game sessions, i did not experience any of the graphical issues I had previously. Every time I exited ESO it did not crash my desktop. Issue resolved from my side of things. Thank you, ZoS.

Has the problem been acknowledged? Becouse it isnt fixed yet. For me the problem has gotten worse. Now also when i tab out of the game my desktop is full of artifacts. I can play the game without issues but as soon as i alt-tab or quit the game my desktop is full of artifacts and i need to reboot. Please forward this thread to the devs.

Here's a video showing the problem

    Problem only happens with fullscreen.

I still have this problem, I just want to play this game.

Edit: I had to cut off my boss came to my station.

I found out it corrupts your drivers, as soon as the game closes down, your drivers are messed up.

Now I have been playing Wolfenstein the new order on ultra with no problem.

I run on an Amd radeon HD 7770 ghz ed. with a i5 quad core cpu on 3.1 ghz (not overclocked)

Now my suggestion to this thread is that people post some of their specs here, so we can have a clearer image of the cards and or builds affected.

I have an GeForce GTX 650 1GB, and while I do not have the artifacts, I do get some problems with D3D11 when starting the game or switching - movie player for one "freezes" and Asus GPU Monitor's graphs go into the mists among things.

Aanyhow, have anybody tried to use the D3D9 or OPENGL backend? D3D9 over here seems a bit faster, but both do not have similar issues as the D3D11 one.

The setting is (<User>\Documents\Elder Scrolls Online\live(eu)\UserSettings.txt):
    SET GraphicsDriver.7 "D3D9"

    or
    SET GraphicsDriver.7 "OPENGL"

or you can use the "ESO Toolbox" addon.

EDIT: Actually used OpenGL during the memory leak, and that ran and still does fine, only tonight tried a bit with D3D9, and it seems it suffers from memory leaks as well...

I noticed 99% of people who have this exact same issue has an AMD/Radeon card, and most cited seems to be the R9 270x.

Coincidental? Or a step closer to determining the cause of this bug?

I think it has to do with AMD Radeon cards. Even though some people report the problems with Geforce cards. But the artifacts seem to be specific to AMD Radeon.
