Will there be another elder scrolls game?

I often see people saying they will quit ESO and wait for the next elder scrolls game.

I can't actually think of any single player games that went the MMO route, that later went back to single player games.

Can anyone think if any at all that have done it? Warcraft did some amazing single player games, but have not done a single new single player game since WoW. Final fantasy, have they done a single player game since?

Do MMO's signal the end of single player game franchises, when they launch? (not wanting to depress people, but it looks like a pattern to me).

The FF franchise has put out both single player and another MMO since their first MMO.

*Looks at skyrim absurd amount of sales*

    Yes there will be one.

The amount of players who probably just skipped ESO and will buy the next TES is probably huge by itself.

The TES franchise is way too strong to go away any time soon, regardless of the fate of ESO. But I am enjoying ESO quite a lot while I wait for TES VI.

You named an example but still ask the question? FYI, Final Fantasy 11 was an MMO and there have been a half dozen single player Final Fantasies since.

Warcraft is a little different as it was an RTS game before. The Old Republic was, I believe, supposed to conclude the KOTOR story line. ESO is a prequel. If they plan to continue the Elder scrolls narrative, they'll need to make another TES game. Which of course will be made by Bethesda as ZOS handles ESO.

From my understanding a big part of the reason why ESO was set 1000 years before Skyrim was specifically so that the next single player TES game could be set shortly after Skyrim.

Also, look at the corporate structure. Zenimax has a couple of subsidiaries. ZOS does the online game, while Bethesda works on single player games (granted, TES isn't the only series of single player games for Bethesda to work on, but still).

Different companies. Different priorities. Different development focus.

I am sure that when BGS is done with the next Fallout game that they will look at doing another Elder Scrolls title, set sometime after the banishment of Alduin and the Nord civil war.

I hope so because they've got a pretty cool story arc going on with the Thalmor. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Rising_Threat is good for summarising the pretty apocalyptic stuff going on in Tamriel that you only really experience from a long way off, like seeing a forest fire heading your way, throughout all of Skyrim, civil war and all.

    Mike says:
The Thalmor is easily the most dangerous organization in the Aurbis. Moreso than Talos.

They cannot be understood. They are the Other and they hate everything that even smells like mortality.

And they're going to win in the end.

That's what you lose really when you make a prequel because the whole 4th era Aldmeri Dominion was sparked off by the oblivion crisis, which was a genuinely terrible blow to the whole world that left deep wounds that weren't at all resolved by the end of Oblivion, which is the opposite of Molag Bal's thing that there (apparently) weren't even any historical records of. Then again Molag Bal is just a poser compared to Dagon. He doesn't really know how to destroy

I think it's no coincidence that ESO's storyline was set in the distant past of the single-player TES titles. This way, Bethesda has no baggage of the former to carry in order to develop the latter further into its own future, while the former can happily romp along its own path with no-one the wiser, because of "dark ages", from which very little is known in later times.

Regarding WoW and the fact that WC4 failed to materialize: in WoW, Blizzard continued the WC3 storyline, killed off all the bad/cool guys as raid bosses in subsequent expansions, had to go out on a limb and made a former April Fools joke into an entire expansion, and now practically reboots it's story universe with Warlords of Draenor, in which any inconsistencies regarding time and worlds are simply not explained, because reasons. Yes, hyperbole makes it sound funnier. :P

With the exception of the Final Fantasy series, I can't recall ever seeing any franchise that ever returned to single player games after going MMO. So I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for any single-player KOTOR, Warcraft, or Elder Scrolls game. We may get another single-player Fallout game, if they don't go MMO on that too.

Hi there, @Guppet. Rest assured that our sister studio, Bethesda, will continue making great single player TES games. That said, this is a thread which is related to the Elder Scrolls franchise as a whole, rather than ESO. This forum, particularly the General Discussion section, is meant for discussing only The Elder Scrolls Online, and as such, we will be sinking this thread.

If you all would like to discuss this topic in an area which is more appropriate, the official Bethesda Softworks forums do have a Series Discussion section for The Elder Scrolls Series. You can find that forum here: http://forums.bethsoft.com/forum/26-the-elder-scrolls-series-discussion/.

History, like a human being, is thirsty when it wakes from its slumber…History wants to drink up an enormous amount of blood. And even if history has tired of drinking blood, that’s only in regards to the amount. But what about quality? The larger the sacrifice is, the more delighted the cruel gods will be.
