Since launch I have seen dozens of postings regarding the number of subs for ESO. Today I found a link that solves the mystery. It states that as of June ESO has about 775,000 subs.

I am posting this for those who may not already know.

    From the article:

    Yeah. That sounds reliable.

If it's true, then that's actually quite a fantastic number. Especially considering how much ESO has gotten drenched in bad publicity.

For some reason I was thinking of sub sandwiches. Now I am disappointed.

I don't think I'd believe any number that wasn't announced by Zenimax, and at this point I don't trust anybody not to fudge with their own numbers.

Indeed. If the data is close approximation, it's encouraging.

Maybe you just don't know it yet, but deep inside, you are. Both.

And yes, if the numbers are to be true, it's actually quite nice. Might get near a million with Steam sales.

Not a million but not bad really.
They'll just have to fix the problems we have encountered, make better content and transfer the server to Germany.

If the information is accurate, we can say that 33% of the beta testers are still playing the game. From the marketing side, you may call it a success but it could have been way better. From the top management side, it's definitely a success. What was the target in the beginning, that's the important thing for ZOS.

All are assumptions ofc, based on the mentioned article.

And should only get better when/if they start adding in more Elder Scrollsy stuff and keep adding end-game content to keep everyone happy. The bugs have been diminishing at a faster rate as of late. Well most of them. So the bad press should start making a turn for the better soon. Hopefully before the press stops caring about this game anyway.

That's not far off from what I predicted we would be at after 3 months. The only problems with it are several points int he article.

"It's not explicitly clear where the figure comes from but SuperData's MMO earnings data is compiled from"

"Game-publisher Bethesda hasn't released sales or subscription data for The Elder Scrolls Online, and as its parent company ZeniMax Media is privately held, doesn't really have to."

"Only the PC version of The Elder Scrolls Online has been released so far, with PS4 and Xbox One versions to follow"

The game probably only needs 400-500k subs to profitable so this would put it up to being very successful. But I also would take it with a grain of salt and not believe those numbers either

For a AAA game, that is bad. really bad.
Take into account a lot of those will be the 3 month subs peeps bought and have already bailed on the game.
The suit's will already be putting together their get out plans which usually consists of a large quick cash grab.
Anything below 1m for AAA game is a VERY bad thing for the gamers also as it means no Investment will be coming from the bean pushers.

UO still has 300k subs.....it's 17 years old now and run from basically a large house. A 3 month old game with 750k? *holds head in shame*

Actually its not that bad. FF14 released on PC PS3 and PS4 and has around 400-500k subs and considered a huge success.

If accurate it could be good or bad. If the break even point is a million subs it's bad.

If the figure was 1,200000 in May and projected to be 500,000 in November (when 6 month subs come up for renewal, it's bad.

Can't tell. Turns into a gross income of $46.5 million per annum. That doesn't seem that good as Aion was projected as $88 million last year in the linked article.

Edited to add - my maths looks totally screwy here. looks more like $135m which would be great. Hope it's true but if it's for June then it could represent a high-water mark as it includes 3 and 6 month subs that will have a level of non-renewal in them.

    But looks optimistic.

Agreed. If ESO was in the ballpark of 775k subs then I would consider it in an incredibly healthy position.

Yep especially with such a small team of only 250 workers. But also think about this for success. FF11 has lived on around 500k subs worldwide for over 10 years, FF14 has around 500k subs released on 3 systems worldwide and is considered a huge success. Dragon Quest X has 500k subs and only released in Japan.

So if ESO has 775k subs and its only been on PC then consoles will bump that up over a million (After the 3 month mark when the 3 month player base leaves)

Also Like I said I wouldn't take those numbers too seriously since they have no real hardcore number or any reference for where they got their numbers.

8 years ago, an MMO with 100k subs was considered very successful. ESO has a bigger budget but still even with 750k subs, that still over $11 Mil per month. Not bad if you ask me.

So if the numbers are right or wrong I don't think it matters, the game is doing good. It's going to be doing good for at least the next 8+ years. Be it sub or F2P, it's not going anywhere.

Anything 300k-500k is extremely healthy for an MMO these days, in my opinion.

Especially considering the attention span of most people that try MMO after MMO, constantly talking about how disappointing everything is.
