So When I bought a steam copy of ESO I didn't realise that meant I'd be LOCKED into steam, unable to play without it. -

Steam forced integrity verification, and, because the new game data differs from the outdated data on Steam servers, Steam forced a re-download. -

It would seem that there is an issue with the launcher that has been downloaded with the Steam client. -
Suggestion: Fix Steam installation
I don't see a point in putting entire game data on Steam if it is not about to be updated through Steam. Imagine two possible scenerios with game installation: -

Not true. I tried to do this and it gave the "login failed.... if you purchased the game through steam, please start the game via the steam launcher" <img class="emoji" src="https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/resources/emoji/frowning.png" title=":(" alt=":(" height="20" /> -

You can launch the game without Steam. Go to the drive its stored on-Program Files x86-Zenimax Online-The Elder Scrolls Online-Game-Client and find the launch application for the game. Mine is called -

The easiest way to check to see if you have access to the regular launcher is to login to your ESO account page. If you see a Download Game button, you have access to the regular launcher.
