Hey there everyone,

A unique game key will not be required for physical editions The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 . As with any other physical copy on these platforms, only the game disc will be needed for verification. This means that you are able to share the game disc with a friend, or purchase a pre-owned copy of the game without any issues.

We apologize for the confusion caused by any previous comments, and look forward to seeing everyone in Tamriel on June 9th for the console release.

@ZOS_GaryA So a ESO box purchase is not necessary to create/play an account? In theory, the game could just trade hands for an eternity while creating unlimited number of accounts off a single game disc?

The disc has to be in the system in order to play like any other physical game on the Xbox One/PlayStation 4. It is true that you can loan the game to a friend and they'll be able to create their own account without any issues, but while the disc is with them you will not be able to play yourself.

@Gidorick Regardless, they are losing the box sale revenue when it is regurgitated by Gamestop after initial NIB sale.

But they might not have considered the game for full price, buy it cheap, find they love it and spend loads on dlc

It is not a position ZOS is taking. All Disc based games on the PS4 and Xbox One has to be in the drive in order for the game to be played. So this is nothing ZOS is doing. The reason they needed to clarify is that there was a mis-communication stating that there was a code with the game and once the code was used, you could not loan/trade-in the game etc.

    Gary,

But those of us who paid $20 for a console copy/transfer will obviously not have to have a disk in the drive to play ESO on Xbone or PS4, right? Is there some kind of line of code built into the copy/transfers that flags the game to run off a game pad command instead then?

Not sure what you are asking, but the $20.00 you spent will give you a code that allows you to get the digital version of the game for whatever platform you have selected. Digital versions of games do not require a physical disk in the drive, the game is just on your hard drive and you launch your game. Digital games on consoles, like on PC do not require the disk. The reason consoles have the disk is that if you have a disk and you decide to trade it in at a game store, you cannot still play the game since you don't have the disk.

When you buy a digital copy, the system knows it is the digital version and does not require the disk to be present in the drive, much like PC games that do not require the disk to be in the drive.

Once you get your code, you will download the game and you are done. No disk needed, no special code to play it no nothing, it will play as normal.

From the sounds of it yes i think they did it this way to be in line with the console games.

Buuut say you have a digital copy it will be bound to your account, so you could go to a mates house and play your account off your console account. But at home only one account will be there no one could make another because it follows the downloaded games to accounts.

Buuut if you have the disc copy then all accounts have access to the game and can play their own account on eso. But only one at the time who ever is using the disc. So only one of you guys can play at a time if thats what you want.

    Hope this helps

Sounds like digital code behavior ≠ physical disc behavior.

Not sure if it is mentioned any place, but if I get it on xbox1 can I link it to my pc version and play on both with same account? Meaning that if kids want to use computer I can use xbox1 I'm guessing no. Also can I use xbox chat to talk in group?

Because no such unified software platform exists that can do that. Steam might eventually get that far, but for now it's not possible on a software front.

Hope Zenimax plans on contacting Gamestop about this!

As they are telling customers that they won't be selling it pre-owned because there is a unique CD Key that prevents them from taking it in on trade and re-selling!

I actually called GameStop last week in attempt to troll them over the phone. I can tell you that as for a few stores in Central FL, they stated that the game will not require a unique CD key to play.

This has never sounded right from the beginning. Think of all the revenue down the toilet due to pre-owned sales and very little Crown Store purchases from consolers.

Yeah a way to get your friends on the bandwagon. Let them borrow it while you are at work, then show up right after just as they are getting into it and ask for it back. They are thinking, 'FFS you could have at least let me have it for the night.' Then they run out to get their own...
