The way I think 'Spellcrafting' should be handled is more as an unlock system of many acceptable/balanced spells, which is more or less what they were planning. This would allow them to pick up thing -

Spears. Could use them with shields for maybe tanking and as a 2h weapon for dps. Also polearms as a 2h for dos. -
