Woodworking/Clothing Survey Envelopes Not Dropping (Confirmed Bug)

✭✭✭✭✭
Update: ZOS has confirmed that there is an issue with Woodworking and Clothing surveys not dropping from daily writ reward containers.
When a survey envelope *should* be in the reward container, players are instead getting a Woodworking/Clothing Master Writ.
ZOS has stated that this will be fixed in an upcoming incremental patch.

Original Post:

I had saved up a lot of daily writ containers, opened them today and got 12-15 of each Alchemy, Blacksmithing, Jewelry and Enchanting but 0 Woodworking or Clothing Survey envelopes.

I've checked in 3 of my very active trade guilds and no one has gotten Clothing or Woodworking envelopes yet today.

Can anyone confirm they are dropping?

I have just completed 60 daily quests that could have drop a survey and I have only received 1 my normal haul per day from 95 daily crafting quests is between 12 and 23
Makes the game not worth playing with such a low drop rate of surveys it's that part of the game I like the most

Yea based only on one day though the drop rate seemed really low.

On the other hand maybe they need to be lower as there will be more surveys on the msrket as some can now sell them instead of just destrying them ..otherwise the mat prizes would tank even more

The survey's being tradable now will most likely affect material prices going forward, because now folks can sell them instead of destroying them so there will be an influx of them

Just to chime in on this, today's daily crafting writs had a couple of my characters get two Woodworking Master Writs, so I'd guess that something is causing the game to reward a writ rather than a survey. The characters were ones who get occasional Woodworking writs anyway and I have no idea if the writ drop would have happened if their crafting levels weren't already high enough to get them, but two writs is something that's never happened before.
I'm fresh out of outrage, but I could muster up some amused annoyance if required.

ZOS has confirmed in another thread that Writs are dropping in the place of surveys for WW and Clothing. So it makes sense that you got 2. The one you were supposed to get + what should have been a survey. Also I want your RNG. 🤣

Yeah, instead of the usual 5-7 surveys from my 7 characters, I got 2 enchanting surveys. While less than 5 isn't unusual, this is a bit out of the ordinary, in fact, I don't think I've ever seen less than 3 surveys, and certainly not the same survey. All 7 characters are max level crafting with all research completed.

When you say “could drop surveys,” are you counting clothing and woodworking? Those cannot drop surveys right now because whenever the game should give you a survey it gives you a master writ, per the CMs’ explanations.

Okay yes your right so that would be 57 daily quests over 19 character that could drop surveys.
So 5 and 3 survey drops over 2 days.
Down from 17 surveys a day over 95 daily quests that could drop surveys before patch 47.
Say I got 7 clothing and woodworking surveys a day that is still over a 50% drop off of surveys off the 57 dailies that can now drop surveys

    Thanks for the clarification!

5 out of 57 is a drop rate of 8.77%, which seems low but is very feasible from the 12.5% chance.

The 3 out of 57 (5.26%) and the combined 8 out of 114 (7.02%) are starting to be concerning but could theoretically still be just very bad RNG. Very close to the reasonable limit of bad RNG, true, but we don't know how many people out there have correspondingly great RNG who just don't have reason to come to the forums because it's a positive thing.

But consider your 17 out of 95 daily quests, for example - that's a drop rate of 17.9% when the chance is 12.5%. So 17 is very, very good RNG.

If we take your one day of 95 daily quests where you got 17 surveys, and your two days of 57 where you got 5 and 3, then you got 25 in 209, or nearly 12% exactly. That's very close to the actual chance of 12.5%.

Regardless, hopefully ZOS will be able to check on this as they are working on a fix for the master writ issue so we can be sure it's working properly.

Only the new ones still in their initial "unknown" envelope form. Once you open them, they become the legacy versions (with a specific zone), which are still bound.

They won‘t be available through writs as they aren‘t properly added to the lootable lists. They exist. You can get them inside Azandar‘s research folios. But they can‘t drop from writs until their lootables are fixed (probably with next incremental patch).

Wish I wouldn't have harvested all my surveys that don't stack now. Oh well, not that big a deal I guess.

But please fix this ASAP ZOS. Updating the loot table shouldn't require anything more than a hotfix.

But wouldn't it be awesome, even if for only just this once, we heard that from ZOS? You know, communicate with your customers? I realize it's not something they do, but hope springs eternal

Well, they did tell in the official Known Issues thread:
Issue: The Woodworking or Clothing Survey Envelopes are not working as intended.
Additional Information: We are bug in for this now and have an incremental 1 timeframe slotted for the fix.

    Why can't this be hotfixed?

My wild-eyed guess is that first they need to figure out why something that's been working for years suddenly got broken. It's a really bizarre bug if you think about it - why those two and not any of the other crafting writs? Why are surveys even being substituted for writs? If it's an unintended impact from some code change (rather than just an editing error in a table), it may take a while to track down.

An incremental patch is a patch between the major updates. It’s supposed to fix bugs and weird stuff that happened through said update. The first one will very likely happen on next monday.
That they have a bug in for this issue means that they are aware of the bug and they are aware of what‘s the issue that causes this bug. So they will fix it with incremental 1.
