I'm not sure where to post this, but in your opinion, is sexism really rampant in eso?

Not as much as other games it seems. You do get some girls who get favoritism from thirsty guys who'll bring them into trial runs to get a skin when they definitely aren't good enough, but that's the most of it. People in the trials community generally treat the girls the same as the guys. I don't know anything about how roleplayers act though.

I remember discussing some mechanics with some guildies and sharing my experience.
One person was agreeing with me, and kept calling me 'he/him', when he was adding things on the stuff i said.
I corrected him/her once by saying 'she*' and then their behavior changed. The way they replied was like to show they knew better.
I don't know if it was because i corrected them that im a girl, or the fact that i am a girl.
    was weird af.

But that's the only real sexist thing i've been confronted with in eso.
I've got enough of that in real life anyway (working in IT as woman)

I judge a player by skill and just how good they are as a person.

Gender has nothing to do with it. I'm here to play a video game and unlike traditional sports, gender has near no impact on performance.

It's probably why I also like chess. It's truly a far more fair environment, and I play for skills that aren't walled off by physical health.

The same mostly applies to ESO. Quick thinking and mental endurance is more important here.

As you can see, I really do not care what gender someone is in gaming. It just shouldn't matter.

I sometimes say "gay" to mean when something is disappointing. It's like when my inner child accidentally slips out for a split second. Where I am from, saying gay to mean when something was lame or stupid was a common thing, at least back from when I was a boy. It's not such a common remark anymore. Sometimes old ingrained habits are hard to break, and I don't like being told what I can and cannot say anyway, I kind of like freedom of speech. But I still cringe at myself when I let the "gay" thing slip now and again. And it's always said without any personal malice towards actual gay people. Not that it makes it any less potentially insulting to some gay people.

You don't sound like a bigot to me and it's good that slips make you cringe.

But I always report this one when I see it in zone chat. Not because I feel insulted but because it needs to stop.

In addition to the potential to make less thick-skinned gays feel bad, certain big homophobic religious institutions who have millennia of experience in twisting words to ugly ends, operate in precisely this space.

Words matter and "gay" being used with a clearly negative connotation like this is problematic on multiple levels.

I value free speech and eg. strongly disagree with how Roseanne was treated. But I support policing language like this because we know how some - particularly those religious institutions - abuse it with malicious intent and potentially deadly results.

Hoo boy, the sexism deniers are out in force again.

Radical feminists are very sexist. Works both ways.

I think most actual sane and sensible people want equal rights between the sexes. But those people who are constantly trying to drive a wedge between the sexes and attack men are equally as bad as the sexist guys who treat women like we are still in the 1950's.

I agree, though I struggle sometimes with the qualifier.

If mainstream media and social media is anything to go by, the hateful variety aren't radical or fringe. They're the norm.

Though I know all feminists aren't like that and have had feminist friends who hate anti-male sexism even more than I.

You don't have to look at individual unsavoury comments only, which are probably plenty of, but the general mentality of 'come on boys' 'let's get this boys' '4-man stuff'. etc., It's woven in the language, mentality, behaviour and action, so yes, it exists in ESO, as the game is a microcosm of real society anyway.

Imagine genuinely thinking "come on boys" and the words "4 man stuff" are sexist.

I assume that means "let's go girls" and "come on girls" is sexist too?

personally, i don't think in 2 decades of gaming I have ever been targeted for being a woman. actually, it bugs me more that when people realize I am a woman, they try to help me, in the good way, with loot farms and so on. Thing is, I am a) a pretty casual flower sniffer, so I have no need and no interest in getting the latest raid gear, and b) if i actually want something, I wanna get it figured out and done *myself* way too often. not healthy either, I know.

I know, feminists all over the world will gasp, but I think sometimes women are too touchy. I enjoy inter-gender banter and squabbles, as long as it is good natured and with lots of winks. I mean, what's the point in having different genders if you cannot have fun with it? Keep in mind one thing though... a lot of us are playing this sort of games not just to kill time, but to feel good about something. And if s/he had a crappy day at work, got home to realize spouse is unappreciative, the kids made a mess again, and when you finally get some time to do the one thing you been looking forward to all day, the slightest thing can put you over the top. So.. honestly, i think the proper response would not be to post on the forum about it, but to say to that person 'sorry if I caught you on the wrong foot, I really didn't mean to insult anyone. hope your day gets better.'

You know, when you're acting like a man (according to their misogynist ideology), leading groups and killing them in pvp, it may hurts their ego. And the problem I encountered came from that.

Idk man, grouping all men like that into such a category sounds pretty sexist.

There will always be sad little edgelords making bigoted comments in zone chat every now and then, that’s to be expected, especially in Riften for some reason.
Most of my interactions with people who know I’m a woman have been fine, though two not so pleasant experiences stand out.
The first was being interrupted by some troglodyte making sex noises in zone voice chat as I was trying to answer someone who asked a question using that channel. It was something minor like where a particular NPC was, and apparently the mere presence of a woman’s voice was enough to trigger some maladjusted fool to show his whole ass. Whatever, creeps are creepy.
The other was just a pathetic attempt at trolling. Someone sent me a random, unsolicited trade request, which I never ever accept. He then messaged me on XBox that he wanted to give me gold because women have a much harder time in video games then men (🙄), but it was so riddled with typos I had no idea what he was saying until he elaborated. Like really, that’s how you wanted to spend your time in-game? K....

But for the most part I haven’t had many issues. But I also avoid voice chat unless absolutely necessary, because yeah, not worth it...
