Have the merchant and banker been cheaper though? Perhaps during anniversary?

ZOS’s Black Friday policy is fully vindicated by the numbers of long term players who have specifically not spent money due to “waiting for great Black Friday” deals. That’s not a situation ZOS wants. They want you to spend money throughout the year, knowing you’re not going to feel kneecapped because your recent 10k purchase is suddenly sold for a pittance.
Given they have no inventory cost (they don’t have to spend anything storing unbought stock), there’s no pressure on them to sell or to reduce the arbitrary costs they have assigned to various digital products (eg houses at 14,000 crowns).
They’re having a ‘Bleak Fredas ‘ sale because players expect it, not because they are lovely and they like you, and they’re not looking to challenge any of their normal practices, cannibalise any future sales or *** off players who’ve paid “full price”. As someone else said, if you’ve bought crowns, they already have your money, they aren’t going to do another dance for it. Certainly not when they’re dishing out the sarcasm of “8,100 crowns value”.
That said, the banker and merchant are both the most insanely expensive and stupidly useful things in the game. 20% off them is still 20% off.

That would make sense if there was more to spend your Crowns on throughout the year! Now I only started in July so I did spend more at first to get the hairstyle options and costumes I wanted and the banker (totally worth it!). Sure, there are occasionally other things released that I want — one costume, Moonsugar Meadow and some furnishing packs. I spent the Crowns I got during the Crown sale and was anticipating buying more for Black Friday offerings.
If they’re not offering Tel Galen at 40% off because they want you to pay full price and not wait — fine, but it’s never available!
THAT is my frustration and I think many others’ as well. After your initial purchases, what are you going to spend your Crowns on throughout the year???
I was excited about the August Crown store showcase (first one after I started) and anticipated all the costumes, mounts and pets rotating out (so I’d been sure to buy those I wanted) only to find they would all still be there... At least that month there was one costume making a reappearance that I wanted, but there haven’t been any since then (nothing appeals to everyone, so why would you only have one or two each month???).
It just baffles me because I don’t see the business sense of it. Of course, there is all sorts of information I’m not aware of and I’ve made no study of sales and marketing so I could be all wrong. But it’s not like people might save their Crowns all year in the hope of getting a desired costume or furnishing pack on sale; they’ve been waiting for it to be available for purchase at all.

Maybe ZOS didn’t have a big Black Friday sale because in the midst of the debacle the past few months have been they felt this might be seen as a further flippant promotion of crown store, which people are always complaining about when they promote while other issues are occurring.
Might be one of those damned if you do damned if you don’t situations. Food for thought.
Yeah because having a crappy sale instead is a much better alternative. Any company that packages a mount with a bunch of trash you throw in your bank and calls it an "8,100 crown value" does not care about backlash.

Totally agree. I'm not sure what the value of making, say, Topal Hideaway only available for very limited periods is, other than to push people over the conviction edge, so they finally commit to the (ridiculous) purchase then for fear of missing out if they wait.
So I agree it's less likely to be the concept of expecting people to save and more the exploitation of 'fear of missing out' to pull money from them. You may be more likely to purchase Tel Galen at full price now because you realise that they are very unlikely to offer it again, much less to offer it at a discount.
If I was an economist, I'd be fascinated by the financial machinations behind ESO and its multiple currencies.
They have no clue how to profit and make customers happy

That is in part true.
I've had a large number of crowns in my account for over a year and precious little in the crown store that I consider of value to spend them on. I'm still playing and there is no way I will add to that total except by sub and that means there is even less reason to consider a separate crown purchase.
You are looking at things slightly wrong. Everyone will leave with crowns in their accounts unless they find that last item that exactly matches the amount they have available.
If ZOS see people not spending crowns then thats money on the table they are losing because there is no chance with those individuals of getting any more out of them. Large long term crown balances are a failure for ZOS.
