As long as there have been travellers anywhere they have marked the start of winter and the symbolism as a time of darkness and possibly death. They called it different names, ate different things, danced in different ways, pleaded to different gods but always the sentiment was the same - we know the dangers, we will get through this, winter will not finish us and spring will arrive again.
