おやゆび ほど の 小さな 子 でも けっこう です から。」
と、 かみさま に おねがい して いました。

むかし ある ところ に、 なか の いい ふうふ が いました。

子ども を ほしい と おもって いました が、

but it was never born.

「どうか わしら に 子ども を さずけて くだされ。
"Please grant us a child.

おやゆび ほど の 小さな 子 でも けっこう です から。」

ばかり で、 いま は こんなに 小さい が、 そのうち
きっと 大きな げんきな 子 に なる だろう。」
とし を とった ふうふ は、 おおよろこび です。
その 子 に、 いっすんぼうし と 名づけて（なづけて）、 だいじ に
そだてる こと に しました。

すると ある 日 の こと、 あかちゃん が うまれました。
And one day, the baby was born.

ほんと に おやゆび ほど の 小さな 男の子 です。
It was truly a thumb sized little boy.

「おう、 おう。 かわいい 子 じゃ。
"Oh, oh! It is a cute child.

うまれた ばかり で、 いま は こんなに 小さい が、
Just after being born, he is so small,

そのうち きっと 大きな げんきな 子 に なる だろう。」
I am certain that before long he will become a large healthy boy."

とし を とった ふうふ は、 おおよろこび です。
The old couple, were very happy.

その 子 に、 いっすんぼうし と 名づけて（なづけて）、
They gave the name Issunboushi to the boy,

だいじ に そだてる こと に しました。
and they decided to bring him up with a lot of care.

りっぱに なって、 もどって きます。」
おとうさん と おかあさん は びっくりしました が、
いっすんぼうし の けっしん は かわりません。

ある 日 の こと です。

いっすんぼうし は、
Issunboushi,

おかあさん から かたな の かわり に ぬいばり を 一 ぽん もらう と、
from his mother received a sewing needle in place of a sword,

むぎわら の さや に いれて、 こし に さしました。
he put it in a straw sheath, worn on his waist.

それから たたみ に 手 を ついて、 いいました。

「これ から わたし は、 みやこ へ まいります。

りっぱに なって、 もどって きます。」

おとうさん と おかあさん は びっくりしました が、

いっすんぼうし の けっしん は かわりません。

「まごまごして いる と、 ふみつぶされて しまう ぞ。
"Be flurried, and be completely smashed underfoot.

いっすんぼうし は、 まわり に き を つけ ながら、

ここ で しばらく はたらかせて もらおう。」

いっすんぼうし は 門 を はいって、 げんかん の まえ に たちました。

と、 よばわりました。

The minister, was looking around the area.

The minister picked up Issunboushi, and put him on the palm of his hand.

「わたし は いっすんぼうし と もうします。
"I am called Issunboushi.

どうか この おやしき で はたらかせて ください。
Please let me work in this mansion.

おねがい いたします。」
Please (do)."

いっすんぼうし は、 ていねいに あたま を さげました。
Issunboushi politely bowed his head.

「よし、 よし。 かわいい 子 じゃ。 いつまでも ここ に おる が よい。」
"Good, all right! Your are a cute child. It is good for you to stay here forever."

だいじん は、
The minister,

よろこんで いっすんぼうし の ねがい を ききいれて くれました。
with pleasure granted Issunboushi's wish.

いっすんぼうし は おひめさま の おとも を して、
Issunboushi was an attendant of the princess,

かんのんさま へ おまいり に でかけました。
they went out to visit the shrine of Kannon.

その かえりみち です。
It was on their way home.

林 の なか から、 きゅうに おに が 二 ひき とびだして きて、
From within the woods, suddenly two devils came running out,

おひめさま を さらおう と しました。
and tried to kidnap the princess.

「なに を する ん だ。
"What are you doing?

おひめさま に らんぼう する やつ は ゆるさ ぬ ぞ！」
I do not forgive the guy who does violence to the princess you know!"

いっすんぼうし は、 はり の かたな を ぬいて、
Issunboushi drew his needle katana,

おに に とびかかって いきました。
and threw himself upon the devil.

「なん じゃ、 おまえ は。 なまいきな こと を いう な。
"What are you. Don't say a shameless thing.

くって しまう ぞ！」
I will completely eat you!"

おに は いっすんぼうし を つまみあげる と、
When the devil picked Issunboushi up in his fingers,

ぱくり と 口 に いれて、 のみこんで しまいました。
he put Issunboushi in his wide open mouth, and completely swallowed him.

おに は あわてて にげだしました。

「おまえ が くわ ぬ なら、 おれ が くうーー」

もう 一 ぴき の おに が、 いっすんぼうし を つまんで、

かたな で おに の 目 を つきました。
he pricked the devil's eye with his katana.

「いてててて。。。。。。 こりゃ、 たまら ん。」
"Ouch! This is unbearable."

おに は あわてて にげだしました。
The devils ran away in confusion.

「おひめさま。 それ なら、 わたし の せ が のびる ように、
こづち を ふって ください。」

「おひめさま。 これ は、 なん でしょう？」
"Princess. What would this be?"

おに が にげて いった あと に、 小さな こづち が おちて いました。
After the devil ran away, a small hammer was fallen.

「これ は、 おに の たからもの、 うちでのこづち です。
"This is the devil's treasure, it is a magic hammer (from which things comes out).

ふり ながら のぞみ を いえば、 なん でも かなう と いいます よ。」
It is said, if you say your wish while shaking, anything will come true."

「おひめさま。 それ なら、 わたし の せ が のびる ように、
"Princess. In that case, so that my height should grow,

こづち を ふって ください。」
please shake the hammer."

すると、 いっすんぼうし の からだ が ずんずん のびて、
Then, Issunboushi's body rapidly grew, and

りっぱな わかもの に なりました。
he became a magnificent young man.

おに を たいじ する ほど、 つよい わかもの です。

だいじん は、 いっすんぼうし を おひめさま の むこ に
むかえる こと に しました。
「めでたい。 めでたい。
いわい じゃ。 いわい じゃ。」

小さくて、 よく わかりませんでした が、

みれば みる ほど うつくしい かお を して います。
but when they looked, the more they looked, the more beautiful his face was.

そのうえ、 おそろしい おに を たいじ する ほど、 つよい わかもの です。
Besides, he is such a strong young man, that he can get rid of the terrible devil.

すっかり すきに なった だいじん は、
