The idiom "a wolf in sheep's clothing" is used to describe someone or something who appears to be harmless or friendly but is actually dangerous or evil.

Recently on these forums there has been an incident in regards to a secretive policy change? Remember a few months back when there was this forum improvement survey that only a small percentage of the community here on these forums filled out. Some of those players (a small 1% of them) have requested less moderation and certain rules to be altered. One of these changes was to allow cursing on the forums and profanity to be used. These players made it look like that using profanity along with other forms of vulgar language seem to be innocent. They came up with various ways of deception to justify the use of inappropriate behavior.

Most people here don't use inappropriate language on the forums because they know for themselves that it is wrong, it may offend someone else, and that these forums are available to the public to view. Anyone of any age can easily read through these forums without an account. There are also a good portion of the player-base here are also children who use their parents' account. Online safety and moderation are very important for the concern and well being of the public. Many people are disgusted and annoyed with how much inappropriate stuff is allowed everywhere online. There,s even movements to stop the profanity and pornography online.

The one mystery remains that in the recently updated Terms of Service it clearly states that the use vulgar language technically not tolerated. Also there are profanity filters on the forums. It even says in the forum rules that cursing and profanity are also not allowed; also it states to keep the forums profanity free. Yet the community manager via DM said it is allowed. Something is not adding up right, its very strange.

Maybe as a suggestion to resolve this conflict of whether or not profanity, cursing, and other forms of vulgar language should be allowed or not. There should be an account setting on the forums for the individual user to turn on or off the profanity filter on their end.

Oy. Profanity isn't "wrong" unless ZOS (the owner of this PRIVATE forum) says it's wrong. If you have personal issues with profanity, well.... I suggest you deal with those rather than expect others to "protect" you (and if you're not an adult, then why is your parent allowing you to post here?)

You keep saying you're "not going" to post, "not going back" - but here you are again....

I go by the standards of the game. To me it doesn't make much sense to avoid profanity in a forum that is made entirely for a game that also uses some profanity (In dialogue I believe I've heard <snip>), violence (murdering innocent townsfolk, consuming their corpses, and looting them), sexual innuendos (lusty argonian writings), etc. Imo It all boils down to the intent of such language. I think cussing is fine so long as someone isn't tryna insult or harm a person.

There is perhaps "heavier" profanity that I haven't seen ESO use, and yes there are chat filters in the games online chat. But overall the source material is not meant for children and should not be treated like otherwise. It's not up to ZOS to accommodate for kids who break rules and use their parents account or whatever else the situation may be.

It's true that people have different views on what should be allowed or should not be allowed. But OP makes a valid point that if the rules say no profanity but then they don't enforce the rules, then it's not really a rule.

Sorry TaSheen, since these forums can be viewed by anyone, even children, it makes sense for ZOS to try and keep them E rated, even if the game itself is M rated.

I don't understand. Are you suggesting that people who swear should be able to turn it off so everyone can see it?

If the profanity filter is on, and working, then it really does not matter whether the writer swears or not. The filter will erase it. For edge cases, like deliberately bypassing the filter, or trying to self-censor, personal attention from the moderators should be enough.

Lol, that's funny actually the forum does censor profanity. At least with what I said. What are you talking about then with it being allowed? It automatically censored the words I used that are also used in-game.

Anyone under the age of 13 shouldn't be on this site. Curse words are something that are allowed in PG-13 movies.

The vulgarity of the message will depend on how it's used. If the mods determined that a particular reply was fine, then that's that. The forum rules are subject to their discretion.

I wish it were as easy as saying it is a set rating. The automated censor here will censor things that appear in the dialogue and title of PG-13 movies, though.

I more worried about those who bypass the profanity filter.

Yeah, there's probably no way for ZOS to block everything that could be considered a swear word. I've seen some pretty clever non swear swear words.

There was a misunderstanding. Its been confirmed that the rules about this never really changed.
