However, I think some players have complained in the forums about bright, flashy effects due to their photosensitivity, which is why I think it would be good for there to be weather-related settings so we could adjust it on an individual basis.
Please. There are a million other examples I can mention that are brighter than a lightning strike. If they have such a severe problem then probably gaming isn't for them. I have a relative with actual issues (seizures) and of course he stays away from most games.

Anyway, even if the weather is server side -- there can be an option to increase/decrease its effects. You got it a bit wrong.

Weather is client side, from my understanding. I remember someone posting that they were playing ESO with their spouse and were in the same zone and instance-- I don't remember whether they were actually grouped, but they were running around in the zone together. They said that the weather was different for each of them-- a clear, sunny day for one, but a rain storm for the other.

    Yes please.

I would like to see some more intense weather. Currently its almost unnoticable.

Remember when you were exploring Morrowind in TES III? When you first faced the ash storm? You could barely see what is going on. I think we could use some of that type of encounters. Most of the weather should be like it is today, but from time to time something extreme should happen.

You could bound those things to events also. Imagine "Its raining in Stormhaven weekend - all nodes are double in Stormhaven this weekend, however get yourself a raincoat... and also: you're holding this lightning staff at your own risk ;)"

Maybe I didn't word it properly, but yeah, I am aware that it's client side, I hate the fact that it is and wish it could change.

Related note, wish the time-of-day-controlling furnishing also controlled weather. Creating, say, a holiday house lit up with glowy lights and glowy antiquity windows and setting time to nighttime works wonderfully... until you arrive and discover it is "thunderstorm day" and everything is dark, rainy, and cloudy. :(

Entire effect and purpose of furnishing defeated.

In that case I guess your comment that I "got it a bit wrong" was in reference to some players' photosensitivity? I didn't say they had complained about the lightning in the game as it is right now, just that they had mentioned having problems with "bright, flashy effects." I believe they were specifically referring to certain skills or set procs, but I'm not certain.

In any case, even though I don't have any photosensitivity issues myself, it's not for me to judge how much of a problem it might be for anyone else. My suggestion for per-player "weather intensity" settings was not so much to let players turn down the lightning from what it is now (which is all but nonexistent in most cases), but rather so players like you and I could crank up the weather intensity without it being forced on anyone who might be made physically uncomfortable-- or even just psychologically annoyed-- by it.

    Fair enough. ;)

RDR2 had downright gorgeous weather. Probably the best I have ever seen in a videogame.

It was also one of the more annoying aspects of the game as you could not see anything in thunderstorms, even during the day. While one may argue that it was more realistic, it was also a pain when you unsuspectingly stumbled into a bandit camp or upon a mountain lion that you could not see. Before you could understand what was going on, let alone find a target to attack, you were dead.

While ESO could beef up the light showers, I don't want a white out blizzard, or a haboob, or a hurricane, or anything that is going to effect a player's ability to see or not see adds, cliffs, or farming nodes.
I explicitly said that there should be an option. That's not a hard thing to do, most mmorpg's have it, for extra performance, visibility etc.

Yep. But welcome to ESO. Where its all or nothing. :)

Please, I really do NOT want Breath of the Wild style "you get struck by lightning if you're holding certain weapons". It's one thing to have it in a single player game (where you have much more control over a lot of aspects), it's another thing entirely to have it in an MMO.

It would not be fair to penalize certain players for their playstyle just because it's raining. In Breath of the Wild, you can always go to sleep in a bed and forward time; you do not have the ability to do that here.

Yeah it could use a major overhaul...it's done much better in other games, I would also love to see more done with the Day/Night cycle in most other TES games being out at night was much more dangerous...I would also like to see a longer night cycle it's weird how fast it passes

Yeah, can't even compare with other games, it's quite bad. Also, night being shorter is sadly intentional, for gameplay reasons.
Night could be darker but imo it's dark enough in ESO (with the right gamma settings) I take that any day over what they did in WoW, where night and day are virtually indistinguishable.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say some decisions are based on performance and overhead.

This is why your toons are 10% smaller/shorter than they were at launch.
Some spell effects have been "reworked" over time.
Cyrodil has a smaller population cap.
...and weather has been dialed back, not only in intensity; but also in duration.
(and other steps to minimize or cut partical counts)

Since rewriting the code has clearly been a challenge (can be read in another thread on that portion), they've had to get creative and do other things to improve performance. Not hugely impactful for those newer to the game who don't know any different, but for those who do.. mileage may vary.

This part now, is pure speculation on my part; but I'd wager to say a little of both.
And also as continued speculation; I'd say it's reasonable to say that server hardware and spec was downsized at some point to accomodate year over year population shrink in efforts to minimize operational overhead costs.

For instance; if Facebook for whatever reason lost 50% of it's population - they would not continue running the same scale server farm they currently do (operational staff included). It would't make good business sense from a cost perspective. I'm sure that same scaling has occured over time here as well. But it's a balancing act as you want to have hardware that closely matches demand, but not too much - or you end up overspending ($) neeedlessly, or in a nutshell not maximizing potential profits.

Pardon the late response from a year ago, but since this got no traction then I'd like to revive it and say I agree.
There's no single aspect in gaming besides weather that draws me in to create immersion. I'd be THRILLED to see a small team devoted to bringing Tamriel's weather to life in interesting and noticeable ways!!

    Greetings,

We have closed this topic as it was originally created in September 2023. In many cases, it's better to create a new thread on a topic that you want to discuss as opposed to bumping one that is rather old.

    Thank you for your understanding.
