I told myself I would put ESO through the paces before deciding to subscribe beyond the initial 30 day offering. Turns out it only took 5 days to reach a conclusion:
This game isn't ready. No MMO is "ready" when they're released. I've been around long enough to realize that. However, ESO has the playability of an early beta game in my opinion. I can live with bugs and broken quests. Been there, done that, dozens of times before. The game is enjoyable enough, but there are some glaring issues that I just can't get around:
1) The gross imbalance between melee, AoE, and ranged abilities. Especially in PvP. There is no advantage for melee classes in ESO. Melee DPS is often at a disadvantage in boss fights in any game due to mechanics, but in ESO, the effect is tripled.
2) EZ-Mode. In less than a week, I've already reached level 25 with moderate game time. After the initial learning curve, it's business as usual. Just another casual theme park MMO. Yawn.
3) Weapon swap. It was quirky at first, now it's just plain silly. They're going for a clean/simple interface and experience...I get it. They went too far. This feels like an Xbox game.
4) Zenimax...where are you? This sentiment is nearly universal, so there's no need to elaborate. Communication, or lack thereof, is an issue.
So, I bid you all adieu. There is some potential here, but it's just not for me. And no, you can't have my stuff. I may be back to check things out in a few months.
