Maintenance for the week of April 6:
• ESO Store and Account System for maintenance – April 8, 9:00AM EDT (13:00 UTC) - 6:00PM EDT (22:00 UTC)
We are currently investigating connection issues some players are having on the European megaservers. We will update as new information becomes available.

2020 vs 2022 | -10K Players (STEAM)

We had 33,347 players via STEAM in July 2020. In July 2022, there are only 24,371!

- The trend in terms of players is very sharply downward.
- The community is dissatisfied with the communication.
- Many have the feeling that feedback does not reach ZOS.
- Updates change the game every three months and there is no obvious path this game is going.
- Every three months you have to redo everything.
- The future is uncertain.

I don't want to say ESO is a bad game, I love the lore and the community. But ESO feels like a beta version of an MMO.

Add to that the poor performance on the EU server. New hardware in a few months and even that is not certain.

The fact that you don't even mention the single biggest worldwide event in a century that drove people into their homes and on to the internet and is well known to have delivered a huge increase in gaming (online and otherwise) is suspect.

Yes, there was COVID, but the fact that the devs weren't able to use a golden chicken to their advantage speaks for itself.

Steam is more likely to show a downward trend, as it also includes players first discovering ESO, and players who join in the free week. The players playing through the standalone client are most likely the ones more likely to be sticking around.

Yes, there does show a downward trend there. But just naming random things you dislike as causes isn't fair, nor might there even be any truth to them. Personally I think it has more to do with how people worldwide are at the moment. You can see it on this forum as well, players want things instantly or faster, instead of playing the game. Everyone is rushing to the end, while not seeing the beautiful sunset on the way there. MMO's are not for those types of people, as MMO's require you to take the time. MMO's are meant to stretch out the gameplay over weeks/months, something most people nowadays no longer have the patience for. But that is an issue for the entire MMO genre, not just ESO. (Note: You can see this trend in any MMO, two months after an expansion release almost everyone has gone away to do something else. But those players usually do come back for the next big expansion/update.)

Besides all that, there are also other major factors in play. Wars, heatwaves, covid is now over, everything is more expensive so players have less money and time to invest in games, etc. Hopefully ESO will attract many players in years to come, and will release many great future updates/expansions. As the game is quite a lot of fun, even if only to play through just once.

Agreed, I generally love to pan U35 but July 2020 was month 3 of lockdowns here in the US and other countries so people were trying to entertain themselves in any way possible so that data is indeed an outlier.

Looking at the graph we're returning to pre-pandemic player levels. However if ZoS did a bang up job marketing and making improvements to ESO to a literal captive audience during that time one would hope they'd retain at least some of the customers that they gained during the pandemic so we may be able to make inferences about those numbers if compared to the pre-pandemic numbers.

I am in the comfortable situation, that my temporary homeoffice contract due to covid was extended to a permanent one.
This saves me 90 minutes of public transport each day, in addition I can use an hour of lunchtime break to do my dailies.

2 and a half hour each day more than if I'd work from the office.

The decrease you see, reflects this. Players no longer have this amount of time, as they must go back to work.

These are simple facts, while everything else is speculation and wishfull thinking from people, who have a deficit in personal stability.
Someone who is stable, does not depend on permanent communication from a game-publisher.
He does not need to flood a forum with posts expressing his frustration about changes, that happen since this game exists.

Two years ago, I became victim of such mass-hysteria, and thought "oh my god, I will lose so much damage, when the patch goes live". But what happened? I made slight changes, like slotting other skills, and continued to play as before. This tought me a lesson to ignore the doomsday preachers.
The post by the OP is a good example, as it takes numbers completely out of context. Very poor and transparent try to discredit a game.

How's the future uncertain? There's a sticky post that they're upgrading their servers in march. No studio would do that for a game they don't intend to support. :D

Why on earth are people so obsessed with posting pseudo science graphs on how much a game is dying? I don't get why people take so much effort to do that, and even mark it with all the free trials to give it some feigned credibility.

Just say you dislike whatever they did you dislike, instead of trying to speak for the community or post some NASA graphs with the "irrefutable evidence" how everything is doomed and depressing. (And I mean "you" as in general, not specifically OP).

    The game is not dying.

This is the second thread on this theme by the same user in a short time. Perhaps there is an agenda here?

Eve Online is carried by a loyal fanbase and is much smaller and is seen as successful by many.

ZOS has as good of, if not more of a loyal fanbase. With many more players.

too bad there's no downvote option :(

The best time for teso was 3 years ago. It had good balance and DID NOT change.

Now it looks like we play on some alpha test server really.

If no changes was made from those years it would feels much better, than it is now.

    The game can not "die".
55+% players are only interested in quests. Even if you delete all skills and just give player 1spammable , they will not care about it.

Only players who come to play MMO here are leaving. As MMO this game is dying.

All big changes were after summerset, if I remember correctly. Yes after that dots get nerf /buff and all this started.
Race passives/CP/Skills/Stats changes hybridization and etc.

Time before that. About 3 years from 2017 to 2019/2020

I did not play before 2017 so I do not know how it was that time. The last stable year for the game was about 3 years ago ;)

Using Steam statistics for a game that can be bought and launched on multiple platforms independent of steam?

    Thats...special.
