Dev source links on popular forum assumptions

Every time these topics come up, there is a predictable chorus of mostly the same people who chime in claiming "ZOS said" these things will never be added. However, when pressed none of them have ever delivered an actual link to the source material they are basing these assumptions on, leading me to doubt their veracity.

So, I am looking for actual links to interviews, streams, and posts where actual Zenimax employees are on record specifically stating the following:

EDIT FOR CLARIFICATION: I am specifically looking for links within the past few years. The issue at hand here is hardware capabilities. Obviously "maybe one day" quotes from 8 years ago are not going to account for the progress of 8 years of hardware development both on the server side and with consumer consoles and PC's, so more up to date and thus relevant feedback is what it mainly sought here.

  1. Capes/cloaks/new gear slots/weapons will not be added to the game.
  2. No new classes will be added to the game.
  3. Housing item limits will not be increased.
  4. Cloth physics will not be added to the game.
  5. Spellmaking will not be added to the game.
  6. New character models/animations will not be added to the game.

Will expand the list as future nay-saying is encountered.

Where are the links to people claiming ZOS have said these things will never be added?

The most ZOS ever say is that they have no plans to add certain things. In your list, spellcrafting would be an example of this, but have they even mentioned cloth physics or capes etc? I don't recall them doing so but perhaps they have. They've certainly made a pretty definitive comment on not adding PvP to the Justice System but that's about as firm a statement as I can recall (and they cover spellcrafting in the same link):-

Do a search on "cloaks" or "capes" or "cloth physics." Literally every single thread, people jump in with "ZOS said no, the engine can't handle it" but never post a link, even when asked. They just put up their "no capes!" Karen memes as if it passed for an actual source link, or because it seems clever I guess. /shrug.

That despite the forum TOS clearly stating this is a violation:
Posting messages that are nonsensical or have no real content.
Provoking conflict, baiting, inciting, mocking, etc. is never acceptable.

    https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/60843/community-rules

That is literally why this thread exists. It doesn't even have to be definitive. Literally ANY link where an actual Zenimax representative says anything about not adding cloaks/cloth physics, or any of the other things due to "engine limitations" or whatever other such concerns.

A Quick google search did find a dev post on why CLoaks were not in the game and it was well into the future. It doesnt say NEVER...but based on why???? Its a solid guess as to Never. I think generally folks thinks its because they dont want to do the art.....technically based on this comment that is correct...but it is about performance of that art....and this is ZOS saying it is performance....it really didnt take much searching to find this and I dont care about capes as long as I can turn the hideous things off (no game has done it well, without all kinds of awful clipping issues...including GW2 (that keeps getting referenced....)....I mean the best GW2 can say is...they have them.....ugly things. LOTRO capes were way way way better than GW2 capes.

If you want to know these things....google seems to work for your inquiries.

I think that never is a strong word, but many of these were covered a few months back when Rich Lambert was still streaming. You may be able to sift through old streams if they are still available on twitch, but that's hundreds of hours to sift through.

The general idea is that some of these are certainly technically possible but generally not worth the effort or performance impact currently. That may change over time as systems get optimized. Some players were upset about account wide achievements, but it's possible that the backend improvements from that system will lead to the ability to add more character slots, and by extension more classes.

ZOS is likely looking at many optimizations that could lead to more housing slots as they must know that is a huge desire from the housing community. While it's not doable at the moment without potentially locking up characters, this could change and hopefully will eventually. That all takes time, money and priority from the teams in charge of those areas. There may be more important things first.

It is good to see an actual link on this issue. However, this is from 8 years ago, and I don't believe this person still works at ZOS. It would be nice to see something post 1-Tamriel, post-server upgrades (I know those are still "in progress" but they have been working on it for 3+ years now so in that time frame).

Still, this link indicates "maybe" and that the problem is people with potato PC's. 8 years later PC tech has come a long way. I think it is safe to say, MOST players' hardware could handle it. Only the wiltingest of potatoes and 2-generation old consoles MIGHT have trouble. But look how many cloth/physics games DO run on those systems.

Something more recent might shed light onto what limitations if any continue to be related to hardware in 2022.

Ya...the old adage of never say never...I just don't believe in absolutes...I never would have thought AWA would happen and it did (that's not a complaint)...so looking for "never" is your problem. Any person who works even a little bit with the public quickly learns "never" is bad mkay......

It is about...is the juice worth the squeeze. I assume the OP understands this and is just looking for why the stance is what it is...or where anyone associated with ZOS has said "no plans currently"....because "no plan currently" is almost always the right answer from a development and corporate perspective.

At this point; I would guess that capes might be a sign of "jumping the shark" for ESO.

With the case of cloaks and capes originally being taken out for not working properly and causing issues they now have to ask themselves if it is worth it at this point. They would have to create a cape for over 100 styles and the number is only gonna keep increasing the more its put off. They also need to make sure that they wont cause extra lag in places like Cyrodiil. On top of that will cloaks be an additional armor slot that can be crafted and counts for set bonuses or will they be purely cosmetic and become monetized in the crown store.

Personally I don't care either way but if they were to go the route of having to create 100+ new models for each style I would prefer it be something more useful like a new weapon type.

My "going on 9 year old" PC will run cloth physics (like the cloak mods in Skyrim) just fine. But I really dislike cloaks, and would personally much rather dev time was spent on something other than that particular thing. Like making more believable horses....

I don't know that they'd have to go that far. Now admittedly I already said I'm not interested in cloaks - but if you consider the cloak mods for Skyrim, those are not specific to any of the armors in that game. I think they could probably come up with enough various cloaks to "go with" most of the game's armors, getting specific only in the "materials" so that there would be some variation for light, medium, and heavy armors, and perhaps a few designs to go with clothing.

The sticking point might be the costume system - because unless they add a cloak option to each costume in the game, that's going to just be very unworkable, since you can't use armor items/outfit system with costumes.

But you can use hats with outfits? So it could be a "hat" vs an "armor'.

Just a guess though...if they add something like cloaks (pure cosmetic) before at least making PVP performance noticeably better.......there could be as LOT of outrage.

Please keep in mind, this is a topic looking for dev source links, not a "should we do it" topic, which there are plenty of.

HOWEVER, I feel compelled to point out these two things are completely unrelated. The graphics team that would be responsible for capes have literally NOTHING to do with the netcode and server teams that are responsible for making PVP actually function during prime time.

The lag in PVP has literally NOTHING to do with graphics load on the client side. If it did, all the people complaining about PVP performance for the last forever could have simply turned their video settings down at any point.

As for not adding anything until PVP works, well, that is not really realistic. This is like saying "if they add new mythic items before fixing PVP people would be outraged." PVP not working is going to cause outrage. But the rest of unrelated game development doesn't stop just because that one department isn't delivering on expectations.

A game company, particularly an RPG like Elder Scrolls, is a lot bigger than just the people who work on the PVP side.

There are a lot of assumptions in your post. You and the person I quoted seem to assume I have made up my mind just because I asked for something within the past 3 years of relevant game status. This is wrong. You assumed that 8-year old link said "no." That is what I would call a radical interpretation of the text. At most, that was a "we would like to but need to wait and see what the future hardware capabilities allow."

Which is precisely why I am looking for something within the past 3 years or so. Because a lot has changed in the hardware landscape in 8 years. It may be entirely possible this is now something within the real of feasibility, especially on modern PC's and consoles which is probably most of their player base at this point.

The uncertainty is precisely the reason I as a paying customer would like a more updated stance straight from the horse's mouth.

In your original post you were openly critical of "nay-saying" and asked for links to support such "nay-saying", and when they were provided you retorted that you weren't interested in old links, just modern ones - a qualification you never mentioned at the outset although you now dismiss those links. You have "doubted the veracity" of claims allegedly made in other forum discussions, although you don't link those but invite others to research them, which they do, and you then reject the resulting evidence supporting such alleged claims. That doesn't come across as being particularly open-minded on the subject.

OK, maybe I am guilty of assuming people would just understand I meant links within the recent history of the game's development without me having to explicitly spell that out. Sorry, my bad.

It kinda seemed implied being the whole questions revolves around hardware capabilities, and those are constantly changing. Does the hardware capabilities of 8 years ago tell you much about what gaming can do today? I kinda assumed people would get that it doesn't. Again, my bad I guess. Let me edit the OP to make it more clear.

Also, I wouldn't call that link from 8 years ago "proof" of anything. What they said was "we'd like to, maybe some day." What exactly does that prove, from your way of thinking?
