Most Complicated Machine quest broken

The quest objective is telling me to "Extract the Black Soul Gem". Unfortunately, the extracted black soul gem is already in my inventory listed under Quest Items. In other words, I already did it, and the quest didn't advance when I did. Returned to Terari's workshop, in the hopes I'd be able to turn it in to her anyway, but she's despawned. So yay!

    Waited around until another person on the same stage of the quest wandered by, helped them kill their mob, and the quest advanced when I looted it. No idea if their quest broke that time.

    Same. Not working. I tried to abandon and re-do, still nothing.

    Edit: I abandoned the 2nd time, and this time the item looted and is in the 'quest items bag'. I googled what to do next and it seems you have to come back to laboratory. Did that and the NPC is just not there. The quest still tells me I have to loot the item.

    This is still bugged as of now (release of Blackwood).

    Fix found:

    I was having this problem as well, then I killed him and looked at his body before looting. Check his feet, the soul gem prompt is there. Wait for the quest to update after he dies, then look at his feet and click the soul gem first, then loot the corpse.

    What if he's already disappeared?

    Still bugged. :(

    What worked for me is turning auto loot off and waiting for the quest to prompt that I should extract the gem, then loot him.

    if he's already dissapeared just abandon the quest and redo it.

    @WolfganGt3b14_ESO 's fix also worked for me - I was careful and turned off auto-loot ahead of time just in case, then killed him, waited for quest text to update, then carefully targeted gem to pick up, then looted his body after quest text changed to "return to npc". Thank you so much for this, had given up on it for a long time. :)
