The Companions are coming. ZOS wants you to play with them semi-naked.

Because... reasons and intellect. Gear drops are so low that it appears ZOS is placing these Companions as memes. If you're buying the new expansion for the Companions, don't buy Blackwood right now. You literally only have around 15% chance of gearing them when the patch launches.

✭✭The drop rates are fine. You'll be able to gear them from head to toe in 5-10 hours without much bother.
The problem is you can't upgrade their gear or transmute it. So if a green chest piece in the trait you want drops you can't upgrade it to purple. If a purple off trait piece drops you can't transmute it to sa better trait.
But really they just arent going to be much use in hard content so why sweat hearing them out? So you can get them from bad to slightly less bad?8 -

✭✭✭The companions are so ineffective at actual combat in the first place that upgrading their gear will barely make a difference. Also, the jump in stats that they receive from upgrading gear is way lower than for a player.
Optimized players are like 10x more effective than unoptimized ones. Companions, not so much.
Source: Equipping companions with purple gear on PTS to watch them solo ogres just fine, but die in 2 shots to Glenumbra world bosses.
All that said, I am looking forward to them for flavor, stories, and fashion.PC-NA

✭✭✭✭✭I'm really confused, the same community that says that overland is so easy that it needs a hard mode is now saying that the companions are too weak to kill basic mobs or something? You can be a lvl 1 with no gear and punch a mudcrab to death. Am I to believe that these companions are more useless than that? ✭The gear is tradable, right? I picked up plenty of drops on the PTS. If Companion gear is tradable, the auction house will fill up with this stuff extremely quickly. There will be a huge supply and the prices will therefore be low as a result. Why are people so worried about scarcity of Companion gear?1 -

I'd be a lot happier with Companion gear if we got a set source for their gear drops. With player gear, if I want a chest piece, I know exactly where to look.
ZOS has made a lot of improvements to how player gear works with specific drop locations, transmutation, and the sticker book. Companion gear is a step backwards in quality of life.Edited by VaranisArano on May 26, 2021 1:07AM1 -

Companions seem to do okay on basic overland mobs, with the caveat that their AI has never learned to not stand in stupid. Against world bosses or in group dungeons, they struggle and end up dead a lot, and again, they stand in stupid. Any sort of ground-based AOE is like kryptonite to them.
I think Companions are a little like having a very new player hang out with you, except that a real new player would eventually learn how to play the game, even through trial and error.1 -
