Old Orsinium Interior - 'You cannot use that door right now'

SteveyP777
Hi everyone,

I *think* I know the answer to this but partly want to ask the question anyway at the same time as venting a minor frustration...

*Why* am I unable to get into the Old Orsinium Interior public dungeon in Wrothgar? Simply states - without giving any explanation - 'You cannot use that door right now'.

My *guess* is; you need a certain quest in order to be able to access that part of the dungeon.

My vent is: why can't it just say that? Without specifying the reason, I've no way of knowing what to do to get to that part of the dungeon...

Hopefully it is a quest I've not got rather than a bug with the game.

Thanks in advance!

On the inside of the Dungeon? That is related to a quest. IIRC, the quest giver is near the entrance to the entire place.

    Spoiler

Note, once you open this door, it stays open for future farming and grinding activities.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Thanks for the response - now that I realise the solution I feel my frustration was somewhat unfounded!

    Thanks again

The frustration is reasonable because Old Orsinium is the only Public Dungeon in the game that forces you to do a tedious quest in order to access the group event boss. For someone who runs these dungeons for skill points, it's a nightmare.

Because it wouldn't have been an adventure if you were lead by the hand (which the game does a lot).

Not everything in the game should be about accumulating ‘X’ number of skill points in ‘Y’ amount of time, @MajThorax.

Old Orsinium has one of the best public Dungeon storylines in the game ... making it on of my favorites.

If it’s the only one with a gated skill point, that’s not too onerous.

I value consistency. Also when you have to go through the tedious job of collecting skyshards and skill points for every character, the last thing you need in your life is more barriers that prolong this nightmare.

There are similar doors in certain delves, such as a door in one of the Northern Elsweyr delve that you can't open unless you have a specific quest. I don't think I realized that the Old Orsinium public dungeon has one, because I probably accepted the quest the first time I went in there. It's good that it stays accessible after that.

The Wrothgar area is a bit inconsistent in general because it was one of the first big expansion areas before the developers settled on the concept of "Chapters." I seem to recall mention of some kind of promise from Zenimax regarding DLC, and they technically kept that promise with Wrothgar since it's considered DLC, but then they broke their promise in-spirit, but not in-technicality, using the loophole that other big expansion areas are "Chapters."

I dunno, I'm just glad there's stuff for orcs.

I wasn't around to hear that "promise," but chapters eventually become available in the Crown Store or through ESO+ as DLCs, so I guess that's a loophole technicality that helps them keep their promise?

@nukk3r "Because it wouldn't have been an adventure if you were lead by the hand (which the game does a lot)."

I think you've misunderstood my point - 'You cannot open this door at this time' gives no direction on HOW to open the door! I absolutely agree with you about not being spoon fed the entirety of the way through the game and challenges are good, but those challenges need to come with some 'direction' so you know WHERE the challenge is you need to complete in order to get from A-B. It's more a personal gripe at the unhelpfulness of facing a closed door and having to do research to find out how to open it online when that kind of thing you'd hope the direction would be readily available in the game. Unless you consider 'research' to be part of the 'challenge' in which case I simply don't enjoy it - and that's just personal to me.

NOW I know and every time I see a closed door - especially if it's in a dungeon - I'll just go to the nearest NPC offering a quest and hope that quest will take me through the door.

Don't get me wrong - it is a nit-picky thing on my part I'm sure it doesn't bother most people.

Oh, don't worry, you aren't the first player to be confused by that message, nor the first to comment about it. If "most people" seem unbothered by it, it's probably just because they gave up on being bothered by it a long time ago. :)

Lol thanks that's reassuring! That particular error caught me on a bad day but truth be told once I figured I just need to go to the NPC with the quest it was a piece of cake.

I hate any shard gatekeeped behind a quest.

Gatekeep them behind the gates in Cyro, that is fine, but gatekeeping them behind quest lines is horrible.

Talking about Auridon and Rivenspire in particular. Doing a long long long long quest for a single shard is nice the first time you do it, not after that.

I'm not sure how you may have missed the quest giver at the entrance. If you got to Old Orsinium, you're expected to already have encountered other delves and PDs, so you should know the drill. If you take the quest (which is a reasonable thing to do) you'll get to that door in a natural progression.

@nukk3r I think my response to you was really polite - and although you're not being overtly rude you are making me feel really stupid for asking the question and that's sad, because up until this point every single person on this forum has been helpful and suuuper pleasant, even when I'm being slow on the uptake! It's something I celebrate in every single post!

Obviously this was never an issue for you but it was for me - the main thing is; issue was resolved thanks to people's help and like I said way at the start of the post, my frustration was unfounded.

Speaking for all beginners (or people who are slower on the uptake) - bear with us, and thanks for your patience!

Please don't take it as a personal attack. It's just the way the game is built, there are no starter zones per se, but if there were, Wrothgar wouldn't be one. I'm talking about expectations set by the game itself and the lack of a proper tutorial.

Not one, but two puzzle doors block access. (And I always have trouble with the order even after running around the quest.) It's why I skip Old Orsinium when doing skill point/sky shard runs.

Elsewhere, Ville Mansion has a small quest start to gain access. Badman Hollow used to as well until they added the portal. Most of the rest, like Forgotten Crypt and Hall of the Dead, have just the quest boss room blocked off. That's how it should be.

@nukk3r - okay - I can live with that lol - thanks for clarifying and yeah I suppose for beginners it is useful to know Wrothgar may assume some prior playing of the game before you get there.

    Have a good w/e!

I am having trouble with this door. I have already been through Old Orsinium and completed the quest and got the skyshard with no problems some time ago.
i am now trying to collect the pieces for the House of Orsimer Glories and the 17th piece the 'Hammer of Glass' is stuck behind the door to the interior. If i have played through already the door should have stayed open but its locked tight :(

There's a thread about this in the Bugs forum, so apparently there's an ongoing issue with this. I'm not sure when it started, but it seems to be happening to a lot of players, if not everyone. I haven't tried yet, myself, but am planning to later tonight.

I don't remember how it was with Old Orsinium but Wrothgar does have some delve quest givers at small distance from door and I missed picking up the quest at least once when I entered first time. (That was Argent Mine delve under a cliff. I descended down to door, while the quest giver was away in direction from where anyone who knows the zone would approach.)

    Greetings,

We have closed this topic as it was originally created in December 2020. In many cases, it's better to create a new thread on a topic that you want to discuss as opposed to bumping one that is rather old.

    Thank you for your understanding.
