Awful ping + lag spikes

I've been unable to properly login to the European server all day. I've made numerous attempts and have perhaps twice got into the game, only to then be kicked with 999+ ping. On one occasion I managed to wayshrine to Stonefalls, but that is the only interaction I've had with that server.

I should say that I also play on the North American server and that works fine. I did all three Jester's Festival quests and continue to be able to login to there without a problem.

Seeing Auhard's comment above, and some deliberation as I don't want to mess up my Steam account or whatever, I decided to try a VPN. I have zero previous experience with them and so did a little research. I picked one, shutdown Steam etc, installed it, set my location to the Netherlands and...I was able to login without a problem. I escorted Princess back to the Jester and got my three event tickets.

I'm in the UK and my ISP is Talk Talk.

    Hi all,

Been having difficulties logging in since last night. Been trying different things as suggested, but I tried playing via a VPN. Guess what, working flawlessly. Tried it on two VPN's. Both let me log in and play for an hour. As soon as I killed the VPN and logged in again I'm back to pings of 999 or not even logging in. Looks like some of the UK Internet providers are maybe throttling.

it looks like germans are throttling.

Latency is red most of time. Lag between pressing a key and action is 3 to 5 sec sometimes... Totally impossible to play

ok. so this is not only at my end then.

i've been all day replacing routers and testing the internet service.
everything seems fine, but when i'm playing ESO the ping is 999+ most of the time. it takes a lot of time to do anything.

i also tested the ports and the firewall... seems like i can't fix it at my end.

interesting. i just noticed that when you start any action, like a guard following you, the ping goes even higher and everything stops, then your character appear dead and you can't even see what happened.

looks like it's time to abandon this game again. it's really sad. i've been away for a while, paid yesterday the ESO+, and seems like the game performance is even worse than last year. i'll try again after the announced Performance Improvements Plan, I hope it solves the problems. the game is absolutely unplayable at this moment :\

btw... I was reading this: https://www.elderscrollsonline.com/en-gb/news/post/56681 to try to understand when they'll fix this performance problem, but they don't say the date, they just say march. so... does it mean that it'll be fixed tomorrow or after?

Good to know I'm not the only one struggling with this...

Saw a few people saying using a VPN actually helps?! If so, can someone please recommend me one? Thanks

@binho I used TunnelBear. It was free and simple to use but only gives 500MB of data a month. I may have to try something else if this problem persists. I'm only using it for ESO and am only doing event ticket related things, so I'll see how long it lasts. I think I used about 12MB but closing my web browser would have reduced that a bit. I wouldn't personally use NordVPN due to the problems they had recently.

I used the free WindScribe initially for ESO, but after some review reading and a few YouTube Video I went for SurfShark as I've been looking into a family VPN for a while. Both worked well for PvE play on ESO. PvP I can't comment on as I don't play it.

Also with Talk Talk, so that's two of us who seem to be getting throttled by them.

Luckily you can still RP with bad performance so the target market for ZOS is all good.

RP is heavily effected as well with emote commands and chat take ridiculously long time to send out, you might as well use discord for better RP experience than on high ping eso game.
  • EvilSculptor
Since Saturday it is not possible to play in conditions. Constantly disconnecting, or blocking the game, I press the skills, it does nothing ... chat, bank, guild store is slow too...

It makes me feel completely useless to go to a trial and give 10 times less dps than usual, and people have to wait a number of times for me to reconnect the account.

There are people who complain about it, others who do not, can't understand that. The internet is perfectly in good condition.

To everyone who are suffering server lag and high pings, i got question to you all

If your main server is NA and is lagging for you is EU also lagging for you as well? Same goes for those who are main on EU and is lagging on EU does NA also lagging for you as well?

My main server is NA but since these lag, high ping, login timed out error and kicked to login screen without error begin and happening becoming more frequent day by day i noticed that EU server suddenly performing really well for me...too good in fact! Rarely go beyond 250ping, faster login and loading into game is much faster too! Would have switch to EU now if not for DLC purchased with crowns are not shared between these two servers.

Is because you play out of sync with prime time. If you normally play during NA prime time (lets say 9 PM) and servers are overloaded / traffic is throttled somewhere and you switch to EU, at that point you are playing on an almost empty server (because is like 5 AM on EU - depending on regions ofc); you do have minor lag due to distance but is manageable. Is a tradeof thought; you will never get really good performance (again, due to distance, but compared to your normal hours disconnect might worth). I was also considering playing on NA but... nope; playing with 150-200 ping although decent is not really enjoyable. Also I would have to find ppl to play with (and is harder on an empty server), and also if ppl start doing that we'll get in the same situation at one point.

Anyway, today things seem to be better (at least on EU). Been on over 10 minutes and didn't get disconnected so that's a good sign. Maybe yesterday fail was a good wakeup call.

And if ZOS actually fixed it yesterday (I actually dare hoping... will get back on that)... well done guys, congrats.

my ping on eu and na almost the same because of crappy eu servers and overloaded network. i used to have 80-120 but now its 200+ same as on na

So you're saying that server performing horribly simple due to too many players online overloading the servers? If that is the case then is a really shame since i doubt ZOS can do much about it with lock down happening around the world, its not like upgrading video game's server is counted as essential job or the average numbers of online players will still remain this high after lockdown is lifted. So i assume that they cant solve it and dont have a good reason to do it?

I have seen this as well. My ping is usually 70 ms or so but lately it jumps to 300ms and higher. On top of that yesterday I was in Belkarth standing near the wayshrine doing absolutely nothing when I got a Loading Screen. What? I stayed in place for two more minutes and got two more Loading Screens about a minute apart.

There is definitely something wrong with the server.

Dunno guys... the performance seems significantly better this week than last week. So whatever they did improved things. Although it still has some minor spikes now and then, is pretty playable now.

My 999+ latency just started yesterday. Unplayable. Still going on today, but at least I could move around half the time, lol. Fighting is nearly impossible.

so what happened to the advertised ESO’s Performance Improvements Plan for March 2020 Update?

we are already on April and the ping remains on 999+

what's the new estimated date? when will we be able to play again on EU server?

I also have high latency and disconnect issue.

The game (NA server) usually gets disconnected at night (UTC+08:00).

Through trial and error for months, I found out the issue tends to occur between 21:30 - 1:30.

So, I usually log off before 21:30.

I thought I was going crazy, before update 25, my latency was between 50-100 in cyro no-cp. I usually play prime time PC-EU. My latency after u25 was between 150-250 prime time in cyro no-cp, and the afore mentioned spikes. Things have seem to deteriorated since u25. Shame. Will take hiatus and play other titles until further concrete announcements about performance improvements from devs and networkers.

I'll also join this crowd here. For about a week, my performance has been very bad. I changed nothing and other games work fine. It's frustrating. For me it largely happens in Trials and Dungeons, and it seems to be largely related to barswapping (ping spikes to 500 everytime i barswap on NA).

I live in germany but currently play on the NA server, so a little higher latency is understandable (180 usually). But this is unplayable, up to the point where I cannot do any group content without constant disconnects.

    Verified the Lag issues.
Anywhere from 100-999ms ping, server side.
Verified this is not an issue with my ISP, as my ping to google and my local ISP is <50ms.

This is definitely an issue with the route, and/or the servers.

With lock down through out the world, the ESO is on F2P trial right now and with many including me complaining the suffering the servers performing horribly at specific time (depending your time zones), my bet its due too many players online and overloading the servers.

When I opened this thread, it was well before those events began. It has been consistent since then, and is no worse now than it was before. If extra players were going to make a difference, it would have been rendered completely unplayable now at this point.

The problem seems to be entirely on Zenimax's end. It always was, and it still is. Ridiculous that they still haven't made any effort to fix it and still train their forum/gm reps to blame addons for everything.

I'm also having crazy ping spikes, and it's been happening since April 6th for me. As with many people posting, I've done everything short of buying a new computer or a VPN. Lag spikes and getting kicked from the server consistently, even after doing the things the canned ZoS responses ask us to do (Port Forwarding, etc..). It's getting ridiculous, and there's been no response from ZoS.

I get that it's going to be difficult to get employees looking at things at the moment, what with a global pandemic, but surely some people working from home can look into it. You're still charging customers for subscriptions and crowns, so the least you can do is acknowledge that people are having connection issues to your services.
