Shield (skills, not item) and resistances question

I am assuming that when you cast a damage shield, the resistances you have are factored in when you take a hit and not what they are at when you cast the shield?
So if I cast a shield on a bar with defending trait, then bar swap, those extra resistances wont factor in?
